Got a nasty bit of noise when the lh rear wheel turns....feels andsounds like metal on metal resistance then it goes bang. Cannot drive it. Drum park brake ok nothing catching externally any ideas folks?
Gotta jack it up and look. Try turning the wheel by hand, check for wobble, check U- joints by twisting the half shaft. Seems like it may "jump right out at you." Good Luck.
Jacked up, disc off quite hard to turn by hand...still not apparent. I wouldnt say no to uni joints in shaft they are funny things look ok on the outside rooted on the inside. Ill take the shaft off and have a muck round. Other than that outer hub bearing disintegrated??
Hub disconnected from diff centre...isolated to inside the hub itself so wheel bearing. Happily I have just picked up a full diff from the wreckers that hub turns nice n smoothand have it off. My 91 though has a shield or locking thing covering the outer hub shaft....and the shaft doesnt seem to want to move. Any ideas on howto remove it?
I'm having trouble following which parts you are describing. Maybe you could tell us part numbers on the following diagrams to help us understand where the problems are. I can't envision the shield you are describing off the top of my head. Can you post a photo?
Differential Assembly:
Differential internals, including the output shafts (Part 10):
The differential output shaft bearings usually howl or roar but won't make a metal-on-metal sound, so my quess would be the wheel bearings.
Cheers,
Don
I believe this is what my 15 XF 5.0l sc is doing now. I hear an annoying hum or howl at certain speeds but only in drive or sport. Goes away when rolling at that speed in neutral. As soon as I turn to drive, it's back. Thoughts?

Hi Exhauat Note Channel,
This is the forum for the XJ40 and XJ81, the XJ6 and XJ12 models from 1986 to 1994. Your 2015 XF 5.0L S/C is a very different machine.
My first recommendations would be to have the computers scanned for any diagnostic fault codes related to the differential lock motor or transmission. Also have the undercarriage inspected for problems such as oil leaking from the differential or transmission, a failing rear axle Constant Velocity joint, a perishing driveshaft flexible coupling, etc.
Depending on the mileage, it might also be prudent to have your transmission fluid, filter and electrical connector sleeve replaced, and the differential oil changed.
A failing wheel bearing could be another possible cause of your noise. If you have a local shop with the Chassis Ear system they can strap microphones to the diff and rear hubs to help identify the source of the noise.
