Question Repair manual recommendations

Good day to everyone,

I'm the new owner of a 1991 XJ6 Sovereign, my first Jag ever. I went into the deal with the understanding that the car needed some work (steering rack, upper ball joint) and the minor issues that come with all cars. I'm looking for some experienced based recommendations as to the best repair manuals highlighting the many quirks of this Jag.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello cmcsparren:

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on an excellent choice of car! Most of us will have the Haynes manual on hand for the wisdom it offers. The version for the XJ6 turns out to be rather good. For the more specific stuff, nothing can quite beat the original shop manuals - now published on CDROM by JDHT (Jaguar Diamler Heritage Trust.) That is kind of spendy, though. Finally, you will find a ton of personal testimony in the archives of this forum and in the 'sticky' files. From time to time guys get around to posting some very detailed repair processes of huge benefit to us all.

All the best!
Scott

Thanks Scott,

I have seen both choices you listed. Just getting a hands-on recommendation. Couldn't get a better rec than from a fellow '91 XJ6 owner. You're right, the originals run just under $200, a little pricey in any ones book. But if it saves time and frustration, it can be well worth the expense. And thanks for the advice on the forums. I visited this site several times before joining. Appears to be very helpful so far.

Replacing the steering rack and upper ball joint are the first projects needed. Already confirmed by posts on this forum and others that replacement of the rack as compared to using a kit is the best option. Why use a band-aid when a warranted rebuilt part is available. And might as well do the ball joint at the same time. It would need replaced in the coming months anyway.

I foresee being on these pages many times in the future.

Till next time,
Clark

Clark:
My steering rack was done prior to my ownership - it is a very common weak point. Thankfully, replacements are easy to get, relatively cheap, and relatively easy to install! How about that for these "expensive" and "unreliable" British cars!?
Cheers,
Scott

Hello and thanks to everyone. I will be delving into threads as time permits. The rack goes on next week, when time permits and won't hit the wallet too hard. Electrical issues do have me somewhat concerned. I would like to move onto some of those issues such as the electric locks and a few instrument lighting things such as the clock and odometer, and new after market radio/cd/mp3 head unit.

I believe nothing will become an un-surmountable issue as long as I have a little help from friends.

Adrian,

Thanks for the offer. I sure could use the .pdf of Haynes if it's useful for a '91 XJ6. I see you have an '88.

PM me with your address and I'll burn you a copy of the JTIS CD of all the shop manuals. For the usual exorbitant fee of course.
