Default Speedometer Drama

Hi all,
So since buying my 94 40, the speedometer hasn't worked, which in turn means the cruise, the odometer, and the ABS don't work either. I've replaced the wheel speed sensor, the ABS computer in the trunk, the fuse, and the relays (both the gray and yellow ABS ones). Still, nothing. Suggestions on the next step?

Is it possible that a plug on the back of the instrument cluster isnt seated? Are there any other problems which may be clues?

Everything on the dash works, except for the speedo. The "check engine" light is on, along with the "Anti-Lock" light too. TBH I haven't taken the gauge cluster out (mostly because I haven't the faintest idea how to since I don't see screws), but with the light on I'm thinking it's plugged in

Grasping at straws here, did you replace both rear wheel speed sensors?
It seems unlikely that a plug in the dash is loose, but I dont know the history, So it was just a thought. With the check engine light on there should be a code which you can access by turning the key to "on" and pushing the "vcm" button on the right side of the dash panel. I havent experienced the abs light YET so I can say on that. Wish I could help more....

Mine's a 94 and I don't believe there's rear speed sensors on it? At least nothing I've read leads me to believe this. The code rom the VCM say "pads", that's it.

The VCM will NOT tell you anything about the brakes.(forget the VCM for faults other than the engine)

I asked about ABS faults.

Follow the instructions in the documents Bob posted to check for ABS blink codes, which will narrow down your diagnosis.

Your car has wheel speed sensors at all four wheels. The ABS could not function if it couldn't sense the speed of all four wheels independently. The most likely cause of your symptoms is either failure of one of the rear wheel speed sensors, a contaminated electrical connector, or a break in the wiring harness of one of those sensors. Inspect and clean the connectors and inspect the wiring harnesses carefully for any signs of damage. The sensors are handed (right and left) and are no longer available from Jaguar, so treat yours gently and repair the wiring harnesses if you find a broken wire.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks for the info! I've never seen where there were any other sensors aside from the front pass. I looked at the front driver's side as well and there's no wires going into the body like the pass side has. I'll take a look though.

And yes, Jaguar only keeps parts for 5 years (according to what a Jaguar service rep told me) so everything I've had to find is either used or "mortgage your house" expensive.

You also have wiring harnesses to brake pad wear sensors on at least two wheels, probably the front right (U.K. driver's side) and rear left.

Cheers,

Don

For abs alert, your accumulator ball on the abs pump could be defective. You'll know for sure if when you hit brakes, it has a short delay before actually braking which is damn dangerous! These are pressurized at several hundred psi iirc & they lose pressurization eventually. If you have this fault, research parts sources, as prices are all over the place, ranging from generic GM replacements which WILL FIT to replacements from the established Jaguar suppliers for absolute stupid money ($500+). At least on my old Volvo wagons, if abs module is defective, cruise control & couple other things may not work, jags may be similar. BTW, mine's a late 94 xj6, VIN last 6 number 706184. I'm getting damn good at finding & fixing problems in the 12 years we've been acquainted. My first advice: lube & adjust your interior door handles & locking works!! These have notoriously junk door handles subject to breaking internally. Replacements damn hard to find & expensive as hell when you do find one. I've busted both front door handles. Found right- side one on ebay for $80, lucky me! Drivers side will likely be unobtanium/ vastly expensive if found. I may have gotten the last OEM one anywhere last year, cost me $600. You can lessen chance of breakage by PUSHING IN ON DOOR while lifting handles.
Hopefully your sorting out your problems doesn't cost too much , good luck!
