Default 1992 XJ12 Vandan plas

Hi guys, I am new around here are relatively new to Jaguars.

I am in a fortunate position to be able to potentially become owner of one of these cars in the near future due to it being passed down through family.
It is in excellent condition with around 44k Kilometers, and has been garaged the majority of its life.

The car is currently in Canada, so I will be importing it to the UK where I currently live.

Personally I think they are phenomenal looking cars.

What is the general enthusiasts opinion on these cars? Anything particular I need to know aside from the common known issues? Out of curiosity what would be its approximate value in the UK market?

Any input is appreciated

Many thanks

I have owned many of the 1992 V12 Vanden Plas cars. First some facts: the V12 VDP was a model built only for the Canadian market after 1985. Its history is a bit complicated but to simplify, these cars were essentially Daimler Double Sixes in the model years up to and including 1987, and again for the 1992 model. The intervening model year cars (1988 to 1991) were taken from the Sovereign V12 line but with Daimler wood, door panels and arm rests. The 1992 model was a straight, fully optioned Double Six fitted with certain Canadian-market items: bonnet mounted washer jets, coolant preheater in the lower rad hose, mudflaps…Only 100 of the 1992 models were built, each one provided with a small plaque indicating the number/100.

These are the very best Series III cars ever built: luxurious, silent, gorgeous machines, and yes, they are very reliable, assuming regular maintenance. The weakest item? The GM module in the ignition amplifier, yes, GM…but easily and inexpensively replaced if necessary. The fuel hoses need changing if they are not pliable to the touch. I am not certain regarding your mention of “common known issues”…my experience with these cars is that properly serviced, they are very reliable.
This is car 92/100; the colour is Black Cherry, exclusive to the 1992 model:

The number plaque provided with each of the 1992 cars:

The full Daimler wood and leather interior - this car was built so late in production that certain Jaguar-marked items were now unavailable - this car came with the Daimler floor matt and engine decals; note the very late single-knob mirror control - the chrome twin stalk control was NLA:

The boot/trunk area: note the CD changer (integral with the radio unit), the wiring for the coolant pre-heater, and the battery cover. the battery was moved from the engine compartment because the last cars are fitted with a Bosch ABS unit in the earlier battery placement under the bonnet/hood.

Note the hose arrangement for the bonnet-mounted washer jets, the purpose being to heat the washer fluid (!); note also the correct speed control bellows arrangement (top centre of the engine) - there is a heat shield that sits below the bellows, often incorrectly placed ABOVE the bellows, resulting in a nicely baked bit of rubber:

I might be able to give you more information if you have the serial number or at least the last 6 digits of the number, and I can probably answer any other question you may have about this model.

You should beware of rust, as on all Jaguar cars of this era. Mechanically, the rubber suspension bushes may have deteriorated and the fuel injecton and high pressure fuel hoses, as well as the hoses linkingn the fuel taks etc should be replaced. The fuel tanks may have rusted internally and externally.
As long as you can do all the needed work yourself, enjoy doiong this sort of thing, and have covered space to work in, you will end up with a reliable and wonderful car.

So the OP seems to have disappeared, having asked for information. He received two responses. He has disappeared without any acknowledgement….sigh….

Hey, thanks for the detailed response!
Sounds like you are very knowledgeable about these cars! If i have any questions I will let you know.
As for the serial number I am not too sure of this - but I will find out. What information would you be able to determine from the serial number?
It is number 24 / 100

Many thanks

Apologies for not being too active on here, a few other life priorities took over so I didn't have too much thought about the car recently. Im am looking to continue the process of importing it across soon.

Thanks

@Ken Cantor Didn't you buy #24 from Gregory? I bought it for Gregory back in 2005.

It is most definitely not Number 24. Number 24 was my daily driver from 2006 until 2022 when it met its unfortunate demise courtesy of a young driver in a VW Jetta. The car is undriveable and unrepairable and currently stored in my Indie’s yard.

I did indeed - per my reply to the OP - buy Number 24 from Gregory and it brought me much joy over the 16 years she was my daily driver (yes, in Edmonton and year round, much to Gregory’s chagrin).

The first picture I saw of Number 24 was when it was being loaded into a transport truck in Calgary in the snow - I didn’t realize you were involved in that!

As an aside, I also bought Number 3 from Gregory in 2014 (which remains a “summer car”) as well as the ‘01 XJR which I bought from him in 2022 and which, also to Gregory’s chagrin, is now the year round daily driver.

Interestingly enough, this means that every 8 years I have bought a Jaguar from Gregory sight unseen, flown out to Victoria for a weekend at the Empress, and effortlessly and enjoyably driven it back to Edmonton.

We haven’t made reservations yet for 2030 but I do occasionally wonder what we’ll be driving back when we do.

You mean this one? That was my #53 behind it. I saw the ad for 24 here in Calgary, looked at the car and sent the ad to Gregory. I parked #24 for a while until Gregory could arrange transport to Victoria.

Interestingly enough, at the time I was still looking for a black car (my '87 was a black on black VDP). I was almost ready to buy a grey on grey VDP from Gregory in the fall of 2005 before deciding I wouldn't be as happy long term as if I waited for a black car despite how lovely it was.

I was under the impression that the '92's only came in two colours (Black Cherry and Oyster) and, as a result, thought that this one "had to be black" as she clearly wasn't Oyster and said "I'll take it".

The rest - even though she turned out to be Regency Red Mica and not Black Cherry - is history. Glad you were a part of it!

I think this was one of the "Jaguar on Bay" cars that wasn't Black Cherry or Oyster. Looking back at the photos I took when I first saw the car, it had a Jaguar on Bay license plate frame. The previous owner had a place in Banff and kept the car there. I forget why he was selling it, I suspect he wasn't using it very much - to your gain!

I though it rather nice that for a while I had a pair of 1992 VDP's in front of my house.

Sorry to hear that about the car, that sucks.

You are correct though, this vehicle is number 21. An family member misread the plaque haha.

They are quite charming in pairs:
