Any ideas as to why after driving my BW66 transmission dip stick would be pushed out like this. Obviously from some pressure, but what would cause that? I know what blows out an oil sump dip stick, but am at a loss for transmission? I'm not driving her hard. And the fluid level seems to be okay when checked according to procedure.

There is a vent tube on every automatic I've worked with, usually up on the very top of the case. typically a short piece of 1/4" tubing pressed into the housing and then a length of flexible tubing hanging down the side. I think it's very unusual for the trans dip stick to come out under internal pressure, as you've said. But there are a lot of moving pieces in the case and air expands and contracts with temperature, maybe enough to nudge the dip stick up a bit. My method of sleuthing has been to remember when I first noticed the problem, and then did anything else get fixed or adjusted or broken or maintained at about that time. If there is enough air pressure developing inside the case to dislodge the 'stick, look for signs of a leak at the output shaft or maybe the TC pump drive seal. In any case, find the vent tube and see if you can blow into it, quick way to tell if it's plugged. If you use compressed air to blow in the tube, and it did have something plugging it, you would probably blow the stuff back into the case.

Dave

P.S. I didn't see Doug's post when I wrote mine.

Bill, I think the dipstick in the picture is a BW65 dipstick, not BW66.

Jose - I believe the 66 on this dipstick means BW66?

Doug and Dave - I just rebuilt my steering rack and will install it soon. While the car is up on jack stands, I will check the vent tube. Maybe mud daubers clogged it? We'll see. Short of it being clogged, I'm stumped.

Jose - No. EAC 2963. But when I lay the EAC 5168 down side-by-side, they both look the same. This is still the BW66 I got with the car that's pushing the dip stick out; not the one I got from you. I haven't given up troubleshooting my BW66 yet. Before tackling the one I got from you. And the dip stick tubes both look exactly the same shape and length. Thoughts?

Bill,
the 5168 looks longer to me. Could that be the issue ?

Only in the picture. Not in real life.

I removed the transmission breather tube and it was clear. So I'm really at a loss as to why the dipstick is being pushed out. Obviously it's some sort of pressure. But I can't think why.

No "O" rings and I don't see any in the parts manual? Only a seal ring at the top, and it does have that.

Bill, the plastic top of the dipstick has twin o rings which go tightly into the tube and keep it in place. Looks like you are missing two o rings in your posting image:

Aha! Don't see them in the parts manual, but I've got a big assortment of "O" rings. I'm sure I can find some that fit. Thanks, Jose.

Bill you're welcome. the o rings are fat and extend slightly over the two plastic "stops" of the dipstick. They also touch tight to each other, kind of an "interference" fit. Just look at my picture for reference.
