Post Transmission fluid coming out of dipstick

Interesting issue here.

The fluid level is correct, checked hot while running.
All is good and runs well.

When the car sits for a month or two (It does not get driven a lot), the transmission fluid actually rises and comes up over the dipstick.
When I store it, I currently suck out a bunch of transmission fluid to prevent it from happening, but this is a pain.

My theory is that there must be an atmospheric breather vent somewhere and if it is clogged, the pressure would build up and force the fluid up and out of the dipstick.

Does this make sense?

It is a known thing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There is a breather on a transmissions, but why when sitting does it rise and come out? That would normally happen as it gets hot and expands. Mbe put a rubber stopper in the tube fitted with a vac/pressure guage to see what happens and when

This may be happening to my 84 as well. Transmission fluid reads abnormally high when cold and it may explain that wetness I see on the trans bell housing. Interesting...

Just came back from a long drive. So checked the fluid level and it is right at minimum. But when I checked this morning before I drove and it was cold, fluid level was clear up the dipstick, off the charts.

muttony,

When you have filled your fluid level in the past, did you do it with the engine hot and the car running in park, and also (With the foor on the brake) ran through the gears and then back in park and then checked (Still with the engine running)?

I just want to rule out that you are seeing the same as me.
Very important to have the fluid level checked with the engine running.

Hi all,
Very interesting.
I'm just in the process of getting my 78 V12 back on the road. The engine is running and it is driving with more work to do before registation.
I believe I too am suffering this problem. It has not overflowed but is extremely high on the dipstick when stopped.
A blocked breather would make sense.
Of course I understand that prima facie the level should drop as the engine cools but there could be a bit more happening than we are aware of.
I am very interested to hear if a solution is found
Al

Classic torque converter drain back problems (Google it) Seems like BW and Chrysler Torque Flights are prime candidates for this problem. You can live with it as it becomes less of a problem if you use the car regularly.

Yup!
That old Chrysler I had did this to me Every Time I stopped. It never gave me any trouble so I ignored it.

My first thought as well. But if it's coming out of the dipstick tube something is a little weird. The end tube is higher than any part of the transmission.

Cheers
