Default Fuel Pump running when I reconnect the Battery

This wasn't doing this before I disconnected the battery. Long story (there's another thread about it). I disconnected the battery because it was dead. I was going to charge it outside the car. Yesterday, I had the battery hooked up and everything seemed normal except that the battery was run down. There has never been any noise since I have owned the car for a month. Took battery out. Put it back. when I tightened up the negative cable, there's a noise that sounds like an antenna that wants to go down even after it is down. An electric motor noise in other words. I thought it was the antenna on. I pulled the radio fuse but still the noise. Went to the back, opened the trunk and it is coming from where the fuel pump is. I didn't want to run what's left of the battery down so disconnected the negative.

Any idea why the fuel pump would sound off so loudly when the battery is reconnected when it didn't do it before? I have modified nothing.

Please delete. Don't know how I did this. Duplicate.

But perhaps someone else has?

However, remember, the antenna motor is very close to the fuel pump...only a few inches apart. You're 100% sure it isn't the antenna? The antenna has it's own circuit and fuse so pulling the radio fuse might not disable it. Fuse #3 in the main fuse panel is for the antenna.

It's the antenna. Just checked. Thanks Doug. and Jose in the other thread. Now question is why.

When I connected the power to the radio, I have the wiring diagram from on the Jag radio. It reads (leaving off Black for Ground)-> White = "Power Antenna". Yellow = "12 Volt". Red = "12 Volt Constant". Blue = Dimmer.

Radio has, leaving off Black for Ground -> Yellow = "Memory Backup (B+)", Red = "Ignition Switch (ACC)", Blue = "Power Antenna" .

How would you have hooked these up? I just want to see how people say they'd do it without saying how I did it.

Industry standard is : yellow = 12v constant and red = 12v switched, as per your radio.

Jaguar, at least during the 80s, was just the opposite

So, red from your radio goes to yellow in the car and red from the car goes to yellow on the radio

As far as I know all power antenna wires, whatever color, work on the principle that 12v "+" will be supplied to the antenna (or antenna relay) with the radio switched on.

Cheers

what Black for Ground? There is a metal ground strap that is connected / bolted to the chassis of the radio, any radio. If your new radio has a black ground wire, where is it connected? that's where the problem might be.

To wrap this thread. I tried charging the battery again and my charger started indicating error. It started fine then aborted the charge. The battery was kaput. Wouldn't hold a charge. Replaced it. I went back to try to isolate why the antenna keeps going after it reaches the end of travel. I was able to jump the purple battery wire to the red/blue and then the red/white to get the battery to go up and down manually but when it reaches the end of its travel it still wants to continue up or continue down. This is clearly the result of faulty switching inside the motor of the antenna.

If anyone has a link on how to fix that I'd love to see it. But this thread is done. I know what the problemis if not how to fix it.

Jose, the motor displays the same behaviour even with no relay in. I pulled the relay out and jumped the up and down wires and the motor exhibited the same behaviour. So that rules out the relay.

I agree; internal 'limit switches'

It's wayyyy too many years since I opened one up so I can't give any details. But once you look inside I think the switches, and the problem, will be self-evident

Cheers

or a broken cable and the motor "thinks" it is still pulling or pushing.

I have one with a burnt/fried motor but a good cable and antenna mast, if you can make the swap.

Hi Doug. We were right. It was the internal switch. Spent the day taking the antenna motor apart and found alot of burnt bubble plastic where one of the contacts on a spring is supposed to close. The bubble was keeping the contact open and not only that, it had melted one of the little prongs on the lobe that triggers that switch. I ended up bodging an extender on that tiny plastic bit and using an xacto knife to cut down the bubble. Put it together and the antenna is working again properly.

I'll do a write up with pictures for posterity tomorrow.

Just finished fixing it. It was the switch.
