Really quite over this; when you lift the lid to put fuel in and you get this biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig exhalation (inhalation?).....what is a proven, workable fix PLEASE!

If you look on the fenderwell behind the right front tire you'll see the vent lines and vapor canister.

One the the small steel pipes is clearly routed in a horizontal fashion....that's the one that goes back to the fuek tanks. A check valve is attched to this pipe with a vacuum hose. Remove the valve and/or disconnect it so that the pipe is open to atmosphere.

Let us know if the whoosh goes away.

I should note that a small whoosh is normal. But yours sounds like a really big whoosh!

Cheers
DD

Replacing the little fuel vapor pressure valve Doug mentioned cured the 'whoosh' from my passenger side tank. Finding a replacement valve can be tough; I found a used one.

I've read that a temporary (or permanent if you prefer) solution can be to drill through the valve to open the blockage. The valve won't work as designed anymore; but I think the only detrimental effect is to reduce the level of fuel vapors that get scrubbed by the charcoal canister.

Replacing the valve did not cure my whoosh so I drilled an 1/8 hole in each housing. No more whoosh. (Dont tell the EPA)

Tut Tut Tut, drilling holes through emissions stuff, very naughty. lol

Mind you, I can only agree.

I wonder how many cars of the same vintage don't have this system anyway?

I tried and tried to get mine cleaned out and working, but it was no use. Finally I drilled thru the insides. Vapors still go to the canister, just no more check valve. This also stopped the fuel smell I was getting in the trunk after long runs.

Hi all ... I removed my charcoal canister instead of drilling holes in the check valve but now my trunk smells like fuel ...I don't have the whoosing sound anymore though
