Default Late XJS ZF steering rack conversion for the Series 3

Hello y'all so the car is now my daily driver after 2.5 months of wrenching and troubleshooting although the car still needs a couple of things. The car leaks power steering fluid so I said screw I'm just gonna replace the whole rack. It's likely the original thing anyway.

I've learned that later XJS used a ZF rack rather than an Adwest rack (I'm assuming my S3 uses the latter). I also read that the series 3 has the correct steering column joint to utilize the better rack and the ZF is the same size as the Adwest.

If this is all true I'm just going to go ZF. Other than the rack and new tie rods what else would y'all recommend I should get as part of this conversion? Thanks.

The ZF was only used on 92+ XJS and Aston Martin DB7. It will drop in with some firm hand bending of the pressure line. The ZF rack has much improved bushings so it wont benefit from poly bushings as the older rack did. The ZF rack will still move around a bit on the bushes but if you want razor sharp DB7 steering you can use aluminum shim spacers that limit the racks lateral movement just like AM did on the later V12 DB7's.

The JaguarSport rack bushings are still available, you need two, one each side and on the sie with 2 bushes, one normal one. They last for ever and are excellent, but pricey...

Thanks for the response so I need 3 bushings total? One JaguarSport bushing on each side and a normal bushing paired with one of the JS bushings? Am I understanding you correctly? It's definitely pricey but I'll buy once and cry once.

Also is this the right ZF rack for it?

So even with the JaguarSport bushings Greg suggested. You think I need to get those shim spacers to get that tighter steering feel? If so where can I buy them? Or if you know their dimensions I can make them.

You should not need shimming washers with the JS bushes. If for some reason you do, it is just a matter of inserting a washer of the right thickness to take up any slight gap between the bush and the subframe/chassis brackets holding the rack.

That rack looks correct to me. You may need the power steering lines too, to and fropm the pump to the rack.

Ok also any idea where to find these PS lines? Also any part number for the tie rods? I know I need them just not sure which to buy.

This is what the AM bushing looks like installed on the rack. I have machined my own from Delrin and Aluminum. I prefer the Delrin.

Are any internal seals/parts available for the ZF racks? Mine occasionally loses boost, typically when doing something like parallel parking.

All rebuilders have them, but they are hard to find on the retail market.
