Default This mysterious Brown and black homeless wire...

Corey /Nashville/ 87 xj6 series 3, one hundred fifty thousand miles ,

So the wire to thats brown with a black tracer coming off alternator and I believe the diagram in my manual showed NB as color of wire and in skematic the wire is listed as fldg, so I know this goes to white through the failure, indicator light and to energize coil ect. Ect.,but where is that?? Is this what I do? Or should I put it on the +12v hot point in front firewall on LH side. Would love to know what it does and why can't I start car? No crank, and I also reattached a the temp sensor which was disconnected, can this be a problem that would cause a no spark/fuel?lastly , where do I put the brown and freaking black wire????

Corey

Hey Corey

Not much to add about wire but add a picture

As far as figuring out spark an fuel check out the pinned sections at the start of the forum. There are several super detailed step by step debug procedures to *** every section of fuel and ignition sys

My 86 SIII was a non runner and I used these docs to figure out ignition was fine but fuel pump was the culprit

One step at a time!!

The brown/black at the alternator wraps around the front of the engine, drops down into the area of the distributor and p/s pump, and then even goes to a multi-pin connector on the RH inner fender, down low. From there it goes into the cabin and to the alternator warning light

No.

Would love to know what it does and why can't I start car?
The brown/black wire operates the alternator warning light, which provodes the resistance need to 'excite' the charging circuit. In and of itself this wire will not cause a 'no start' situation. However, if disconnected the alternator won't charge (or won't charge at low RPM) so the battery will not be getting charged

No crank,
This should help
Engine Will Not Crank Checklist

and I also reattached a the temp sensor which was disconnected, can this be a problem that would cause a no spark/fuel?

if it was the single wire sensor for the dashboard gauge then, no, it wouldn't cause a fuel or ignition problem. If it's the two wire sensor for the fuel injection computer, yes, it would cause a fueling problem if disconnected. In fact, it won't run at all if disconnected

lastly , where do I put the brown and freaking black wire????
Are you asking where on the back of the alternator does it go? If so, look for a vacant connection point on the back of the alternator

Cheers
DD

Default No I didn't run it to power point!!

Haven't had time today worked on zero turn I just bought instead, but I'm sure glad I was these fun facts , in the morning I'll run the wire that is hanging out of the alternator still which is brown/black or NB and run it to right spot and tell me more about the fuel pump wires or the connector,

All UK cars used the colour codes as outlined here. AFAIK it was established by Lucas.

Default That was helpful

I at least determined the wire that is disconnected, it's the NB alternator battery sensing lead , and it goes to the warning light via a retstor , only resistor I can think is ballast but I took off, ( still not sure if it's the same as negative coil lead,if u were to connect it to lead it seems as if the circuit would close and my coil and fuel may come back, I dunno, man I'm over it for today

Corey, the NB wire doesn't have anything to do with the ignition coil and nothing to do with 'ignition' in terms of starting the engine. Nor does it have anything to do with the fuel pump.

The brown/black at the alternator wraps around the front of the engine, drops down into the area of the distributor and p/s pump, and then eventually goes to a multi-pin connector on the RH inner fender, down low. From there it goes into the cabin and to the alternator warning light.

If the engine won't crank, here is some info
Engine Will Not Crank Checklist

If the engine cranks but won't start, more info:
ENGINE CRANKS BUT WON'T START

If the fuel pump isn't working:

The temp sensor for the fuel injection is on the water rail, third position back. It has black and blue/orange wires

Default So found other NB

But I hooked it up and my indicator went out on dash for battery and my warning lamp but still no prime or fire, the wires on ignition are my next thought and yes I've checked the inertia switch , I have a click back in the trunk which to me would solidify that power is trying to go back there in boot but still in a conundrum, I'm gonna look at wiring diagrams now , thanks
