Talking Nix Is Getting New Heads!

Husband bought Nix a gift.

Ain't they purdy!

And the Very first thing he said was, "Now don't get too excited because these are the smallest heads AFR makes. I ordered them specifically for a street engine."

I was a bit concerned at first, because I've heard of people putting hot heads or a hot cam in a used engine and blowing out the bottom end.

They do have 135 pound springs as opposed to stock 75 pounds, but he assures me that as my cam is "well seasoned" there will be no trouble. And if there is, then "we get to put in a new cam!" and for Sure blow out the bottom end! It's a good thing it holds 40 pounds oil pressure.

He was almost giddy.

They are pretty... I love the look and hope they work out well for you... my 383 SBC has similar heads but from Edelbrock.. another cam is no big deal if it is called for in the future...
Tomorrow is fix my power steering leak but by replacing the bad pipe unions seals in the rack... hope it works out as well as your fix did by installing the copper washers.

oooooooooh, I am so envious. I apparently have the worst version of SBC head castings on my engine, but thankfully not cracked and running OK. The price of alloy heads is pretty stupid here as it is non mainstream and the "Australia Tax" (ridiculous prices, import costs and taxes) applies. Keeping my ears open for something falling out of an abandoned project or similar.

Are you resisting the urge to look at intake options while you have things apart?

I bet these wont wait for winter :-)

Very nice. If you are anything like me you could just sit and look at them, hanging out to find time to fit them.

Oh, what a great prize for NIX and her stewardess. Husband quite aware of "happy wife is a nappy life". Well done, sir!!!'

And the awful exhaust is gone!!!

40 PSI is great SBC OP. Just right. Mine does just that.

Now, a better intake? Can't o must you plomp on a grungy in comparison, cast iron thing.

Smog inspection in two???? I didn't want to bring up the nasty at the time of joy, but?

Tisn't the heads that will stress the bottom end, but miladie's foot !!!!

Onwards and upwards.....

Default Thanks, Guys!

Grant: LOL @ wake Nix up a tad!
Giggling actually!

Roger: It's just that changing the cam means taking the whole front of the car off. That was Such a pain last time that I Really don't want to do it again any time soon!

I also hope you get the steering leaks sealed. A few drops I don't mind, but the oil slick I had was completely unacceptable.

Doug: (grin)

You are Absolutely right! I'm pressing for this to be finished by the end of May. I've already had enough down time for this year.

Clarke: Yes, they're So pretty it's almost a shame to get them all dirty on the engine! For sure, now I'll be Forced to keep the engine bay CLEAN!

Gary: I think it was the new exhaust that got him thinking, "might as well do this too."

Jim: I don't know what came over him, but I think it was the fella offering to fix the exhaust that lit a fire under him. He has mentioned more than once, "She should have some decent heads." Or, "She'd run a lot stronger with some decent heads."

Carl, you are Such a hoot!!

I do have a lead foot, I freely admit.

It already has the optimum alloy intake that's smog legal, and she just passed with Flying Colors (quite a celebration, I tell ya)!

Husband has all the BAR documentation stating these heads are California Legal in case that should ever come up. He obviously researched these prior to purchase.

Nice! AFR makes a great product. I'd be jealous if I already didnt have a set. I've got CNC 195's with a near stock cam and the performance is wonderful.

As for the cam.... Some of those LT1's came with a tiny 196 @ .050 cam. .050 I'm running a 210 at .050 but with more lift. The AFR heads can handle the lift and the GM heads can not so you should at the very least upgrade to a 1.6 roller rocker ratio.

ISO:

The image was too small for me to read comfortably, even with specs on, but, I got it.

Yes, my LT1 came from a 94 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. And as such has the "small cam". Goes with the CI head package it appears. Tuned for smooth torque, I suppose is the reasoning. This group of cars is really big and heavy. Seems to be a good match for my smaller but not light Jaguar. I like the combo a lot.

Thank you so much!
As nearly everything else on the car has been "upgraded," repaired, readjusted and set right, now it's time for the engine; but One thing at a time.

I would still like her to be a sleeper; sounds nice and innocent until I stick my foot through the firewall.

You're right, Clarke, this will probably be next Winter's project.
I was just thinking yesterday what I could do next.

Default Roller Rocker Arms

Husband said the other evening, "We're in for another round of serious inflation so we might as well buy what we want now." I don't know how he figures that but I don't argue, as he's been through way more economic ups and downs than I have and it's his money.

Anyway, he then proceeded to put in an order to Summit Racing for new rocker arms and push rods to go with the new heads. They arrived today. Just look at these beauties:

These are as close as he could get to the ones icsxxx recommended; 1.52" because 1.6" is not legal in California in this engine (350) of this year (1976).

They also come with these groovy ***** with oil slots! I've never seen these before!

New push rods are in the pipeline somewhere, and as soon as they arrive the project begins.

I've made it clear I that this must be Completed by the next Jag Club trip June 3, which is a tour of some mining camps up in the Gold Country in the Sierra Nevada Foothills.

Watch this space for further updates.
