Overflowing fuel tanks
Hi All,First time postIhave a bad fuel problem 1971 xj6 fuel seems to be getting pumped from right hand to left tank. Have replaced seals on the lids thought it was old seal. But has after market fuel pumps fitted i thought pumps would have one way valves but you can blow both ways on the left pump. Was thinking it was pressure at first but i filled both tanks and ran right hand and left hand over flowed a lot of fuel out the top.to the point that a car behind drove up next me and told me. Will fitting su pumps back make a diffrence ?. Any help would be great. Will post some pics of the girl soon as i slowly bring her back.

Hi Alan
Thanks for the reply, i will be removing the IRS in a few weels to replace brakes and mounts and fix some oil leaks. So ithink i will remove the fuel tanks and give them a look over while iam in there and i;ll look for the valves. I realy need to fix this problem as its flows out at a rate of knots has damaged the paint on the rear mudguard. I;ll have another look through my manual and look for these valves.
Jeff.

If it is a series 1 XJ6 as your post suggests it will be a carbied car and not have return lines to the tanks. I assume the pumps have an internal check valve inside since there is no shut off valve/switch between the pumps.
Possibly the after market pumps do not have a check valve inside them(or it has failed). Therefore the pump will be pumping fuel to the carbies as well as back through the other pump to the other tank at the same time.
If it an S1 you have I have a lot info on parts etc in Qld & Aus. And all part numbers for your car. (PM me for my ph number or details)

Jeff, some info after our phone chat today.
The pumps I have are ECCO 1.5LM12v . They have an internal check valve in them.
A couple on ebay, you would need to check with the seller if they have check valves.

Another cheaper option might be fitting inline check valves between the tank & the pump. And use your pumps you already have. They are all over ebay. I used this style on my old Jeep I had, to save removing the fuel tank to replace an internal fuel pump with a failed check valve.
