series 3 wont drive
recently bought daimler double six as a non runner. got car car running but will not drive wont even budge and no strange noises and fluid levels are ok.
car drove before laid up and only reason for being laid up was that owner rung a spark plug in the cylinder head. any help would be greatly appreciated

Does it feel like it is *trying* to move? Like, straining against seized brakes?
Or more like revving up but no power transmitted to the drive wheels...as though transmission was in neutral?
Cheers

Is the gearshift cable actually connected to the gearbox ? Is the throttle cable, (normally called a "kickdown" cable) connected. If all are OK this has all the hallmarks of a broken torque converter that is failing to connect the engine to the gearbox..
Looks like you know now why it was a non-runner, anyways.

yeh cable is connected to gearbox and is moving selector and so is kickdown cable. was a non runner but with engine problem, could torque covertor have been damaged by previous owner towing it ? i have a series 3 4.2 will the torque convertor out of it work?
thanks
thanks
Yeh levels are good even when hot. Any other ideas

OOOOh, towing!!!! If not properly done, sure can mess up an auto box.
Not sure, but could it be that your car has a GM box and nota BW? Might be only in the XJS V!2 cars that Jaguar used the TH400. if so, the 4.2 converter will not work.
If it is a BW box, it just might. If it bolts in, the stall speeds might be different.
A parts catalog would be of immense help to check the numbers for each and see if they are alike or even similar.
And, somewhere, more searching needed might be spec's for each.
And, do you suppose that the bolts fastening the converter to the flex plate are gone? Happened to me!!!

could it be the load cable from throttle assembly to gearbox not being adjusted properly causing no drive. all this assembly, injectors, coils, etc was stripped off the engine when i got the car???? last owner assures me it was driving before he tried to service it and rung the sparkplug in the head..
thanks david

If it's a Series 3 DD6, it will have the GM400 auto box, the switch from BW took place in 1977. The sixes had the Borg-Warner 66, so the two are not interchangeable. Parts for the GM box might be easier though. I suspect you need to make an appointment with an auto gearbox specialist.
