Before I get my new Nardi wheel, I need to un-seize my column adjustment. I've removed the standard wheel and soaked the splines with penetrant, beat on the shaft with a soft mallet and pushed and pulled to no avail. Anyone have a secret fix?

 

is the scalloped "nut" all the way loosened to the left?

 

There is a set screw in the lower collar of the knurled
lock ring assembly.
Remove the set screw and rotate the lock ring fully counter clockwise.
The steering wheel should slide right out of the splines in the column.
The set screw bottoms out on the locking ring.
The set screw is located in the collar between the bezel that covers the signal switch and the lock ring.

just for the sake of trivia, the older Jaguars have a less troublesome telescoping steering column. Also the scalloped nut is REALLY scalloped which lets you grab it positively to loosen or tighten it. The splined shaft is also thicker / sturdier.

I am not sure if the older telescoping section can be adapted to a Series 3 but it sure would be an improvement!

 

Adjusting "nut" can be fully loosened and fully tightened, but in either setting, the wheel refuses to telescope.

 

since you already have removed the steering wheel, the telescoping section is also removable in one piece complete with scalloped nut. Instructions in the Service Manual.

In the fully tightened position, the column will not telescope in or out.

Great photos, Jose. Is there a way to lubricate the sliding mechanism? Like preventative maintenance.

I have never lubed the ones in my two Jags, or the spare in the pictures, they are smooth enough without any lubrication. These things seem to be self-lubricating? seems as if there is grease in the inside guts as I can smell "differential grease" in the spare one but I don't see it.

 

Finally managed to take the steering wheel off, but the adjusting assembly was seized solid to the upper column. Decided to take it all apart piece by piece in-situ. Once I slackened that locknut and the little screw, the unit was able to be removed. Someone has been in there before me and really messed it up big-time. But at least they put back all the parts, albeit in the wrong way. Once I cleaned everything up with a light file (as per the Service Manual), I reassembled it correctly with that split collar's tang engaged in the plastic ring and after a smear of Copperslip to the splines, everything works perfectly and smoothly.

SO REWARDING WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WELL WITH THIS KIND OF JOB!
