Default XJ6 1974 - Brake light switch location?

Can anyone tell me where the brake light switch is located? I don't think it is on the proportioning valve. Possibly on the brake pedal. Any help would be appreciated. thank you Jack walls.

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJ6 Series I, II & III forum.

Members here with the same model will be able to help.

The switch to activate the brake lights is on the pedal assembly up close near the firewall. My car is RHD but I would assume it's the same.

I can show you where it is on a Series II, at the very top of the pedal, Red arrow. Picture attached.

Rather rinky dink setup in my view.

Graham,
Thank you for taking the time to move my question to the appropriate spot. As a junior member I am still learning the in's and out of the forum.

Interesting. Elinor, your picture is hard to understand in a way. It seems upside down. But, actual reality as that is how it is seen in situ!!!

Actually not a bad device as they go. I've seen much worse.

My car is a bit more complex as it also has a similar switch alongside to dump the throttle when in cruise control model. The default positions are exactly opposite!!

When my brake light went dark, I swapped it out for a unit provided by lister David Boger.

I fixed the power supply as well as the torque converter lock as well when there, upside down!

Some other earlier cars, not Jaguars to my limited knowledge used a hydraulic switch. Issues there as well.

Carl,
When I lay on my back under the dash and look up this is exactly what I see.
I just aimed the camera that way, checked to be sure the switch was in the frame and <click> this is what I got.

Your Series 3 may be different than our series 2 cars.

Agree, how else would you take a picture of it in situ!!!

The switch pair might be somewhat different, but the location seems the same and the function is similar. Brake light unit default is open til pedal pressed. Ignition must be on for power to be available. Fuse in nearby location, I think.

The SII and SIII cars are very similar.

I suspect my new to me ignition switch came from an SII or even an SI!!

Going good!!!

lnrB,

Thank you for the photo. It is exactly as I found mine. I do find it interesting that I have purchased three different switches from several suppliers and none of them were the correct switch. I was, however, able to take mine apart, clean the contacts, increase the strength of the spring etc and it is now re-installed and functioning quite well.

Your photo was a big help.

Do you have any idea as to where I can purchase the plastic lenses for the interior lighting located on the door post on either side?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks again

Jack Walls

I'm glad I was able to help, Jack.
Many if not most, switches on these car can be treated just that way; taken apart, cleaned and reassembled, and they'll probably work for another 40 years. There were very few 'disposable items' in these Ancient cars.

Maybe some of our sponsors, EverydayXJ (Everyday XJ) for example, might have the pillar light lenses you need. David has Numerous used items and has an Extensive inventory.

Give him a try.

Lnrb,

Thanks again. I have posted a request to Everday XJ and bookmarked it as well. They look like a great source. There are a lot more suppliers for Jag parts than I expected.

I will stay in touch.

LnrB,

I spoke with Terry at Everyday Jag and he is looking for the lenses. They don't have any in stock, however, they do have a brake light switch and it is on the way. He knew exactly what I needed. It was a pleasure talking to someone who knows Jag's.

Thank you for the tip. I expect I will be using them a lot.

Elinor,

I misspoke, I did contact Everyday Jag and they were unable to help. I then called Jagoutlet.com and had a long conversation with Terry. He knows Jag's, as well he should as that is all they deal. Both new parts as well as used. He is sending me a list of what he figures I will need for my Jag. An interesting approach to sales. Just thought I should pass this along.

Have a great day.

Jack

I'm glad you're finding parts, Jack, no matter where. Parts are where you find them, I'm learning, especially parts for these Elderly cars.
