1996 XJS Convertible- replace tires
I’m looking to replace the original tires on my 1996 xjs. The originals still have plenty of tread but due to their age the car seem to not ride as smooth as it should.
Any recommendations on tires that will provide a smooth ride?
best regards,
KC

You’re looking to replace 29 year old tires?
Yeah…I’m not surprised that the ride isn’t great. I’m more surprised that they are still working at all! Rubber that age can get brittle and quickly, spontaneously deteriorate.
Id look up Tirerack for what you are looking for. Generally speaking, summer tires with quick wear ride the best. The lower the wear rating, the softer the tire, the nicer the ride. Now if you’re using them in the snow, and maybe the rain, all bets are off.

I'm nearly 70 and in the "good told days long gone by" lol. The norm. was to drive the car tyres until the tread was deemed it was time to get another set ...
Then they added a "used up by date.." Built in obsolescence

I also purchased a 96 model 2 years ago and replacing the older tyres (they were 10+ years old) didn't make any significant change.
The expected smooth ride came back after replacing the almost 30 years old shock absobers.
None of the 6 shock absorbers were leaking but 2 of them have completely lost pressure.

Normal circumstances I would agree. Fortunately, has never been driven in snow and always garage keep in temp control environment. Took out for occasional trip to the ice cream or coffee shops.
Friend was recommending P0 rated tires by Pirelli and they should give me a smooth soft ride. Living in Southern Florida where the temps can get pretty hot and not forgetting the rain I'm not sure the P zero rated tires won't give me good traction. So, I'm thinking something in the middle and not necessarily all season since I live in Florida.

Me too. I was very impressed with the grip and ride on these tires, they were a noticeable improvement from the Michelins I replaced Top ratings on Tire Rack as well. I'm very happy with them.
