Anything I need to know about before I try and remove the driver side interior door panel?

1. pull back the armrest forward end plastic chrome finisher and undo the large screw (No. 3 pozi)
2. unscrew the chrome plate that pushes the door switch
3. unscrew the single small screw below the forard end of the pocket
4. pull pack the edges starting at the front vertical top, and unpop the poppers that hold the edges, all round to the rear vertical top
5. the card is now held in by three metal clips that locate downwards into horizontal tags in the door metal, two at the top inside and one level with the armrest inside
6. wack the card upwards with the heel of your hand and it will pop up and be loose
7. you have to undo the coutesy light connector and unplug the speaker wires and it is free

Reinstallation is the reverse, the only tricky bit is making sure all three metal clips are engaged in the door metal. It is easy to not engage one of them.

I got the door panel off, but when I shut the door without the trim, the interior lights stay on. If I re-connect the wires for the door light at the bottom AND semi re-install the panel and close the door, the lights go off. If I close the door w/o the panel and just connect the wires, the lights DO NO go off. Interesting trick. Has anybody run across this and how to de-activate? I was thinking I could connect the 2 wires for the light to close the circuit, but I figured it would either work, or it would really mess something up. So I thought I'd ask before I did anything.

 

The thickness of the panel, combined with the chrome plate that is at the front of the door panel is what presses against the switch to turn it off. Without the panel and plate in place, the door doesn't depress the switch far enough to turn it off.
Tape a thickness of cardboard where the plate is supposed to be.

 

be carefull with the leather on the armrest when sliding the finisher back if you can get the chrome at the front of the armrest off without damaging the leather, remove it and drill a hole in the front to insert the screwdriver though if you ever need to take it off in the future,

The car was designed in the 60s & 70s by guys who were likely smoking Mother Nature for inspiration. That's the only explanation I have for many of the "interesting" features, and engineering concepts on the car.

 

My dear fellow, what a terrible calumny! Only a decent navy cut tobacco in a Dunhill pipe for the lads from Cov ! Plus a pint of warm english bitter after work, of course.

i've had my door panel off for like 6 months, with the chrome plate taped to the edge of the door so my lights go off.
