hard shifting transmission
Just wondering if any have experienced this situation and what is the cure?
Occasionally my 94, 4 litre decides it dosen't want to shift up through the gears smoothly. The transmission light will come on and shifts are very fierce. If I pull over stop the car and turn it off / start it again, all is OK until the next time. This may be a day or two down the road, or almost as soon as I start driving again.
I don't worry about driving the car, there is no transmission slippage or hesitation. trip from Toronto to Cape Cod last year turned out well though we did have to stop a few times due to the condition mentioned above.
I replaced the transmission computer located in the trunk but this made no change to what I have described.
Looking forward to your input.

What are the codes when the light comes on? this trans is the 4L80E? I had a slew of errors on my 1996 XJR turned out to be a worn trans mount causing the harness to pull some of the wires out of the connector it sounds like you may have the same trouble with the intermittent fault
Thanks for the photo and suggestion. My car is still in storage from the winter, but will be out this weekend ( weather permitting ) I will get the code/codes pulled and have my mechanic, Jag owner himself, check out the harness.
Cheers!

fluids are fine. one of the first things I had done was to service the tranny. new fluids and filter. That didn't help at all ( but I'm sure it didn't hurt either ).
I will have the mounts checked.
Thanks guys.

yeah definitely the next place to look. Usually cars that have flex joints or lots of rubber holding in the diff they will knock around feel as if they are shifting hard. That rear mount would be no different

to Sidescrollin and Moff1959: I'll definitely have the mounts checked, but I expect the hard shifting would be consistent and not occasional if they were to be faulty and causing the problem. I'm hoping a read of error codes will be my best bet.
Oh, by the way, just found the thank you button, so belated thanks to all.
