'The Ice Princess' No Oil Pressure! Help!!!!
Hi Guys
I've just been trying to Start 'The Ice Princess'
As She hasn't got the ABS Pump installed, I pulled both of the 30 Amp Fuses for the ABS and the Brake Pump
So I wouldn't have the Brake Pump Running Dry
Before I tried to Start Her, I checked the Oil and Water and that was all Ok
Then I put on a Battery to turn the Engine Over and try and Start Her
At first She didn't want to Start (so I'm thinking blocked injectors)
But then She eventually tried to Start but was running rough (where again I am thinking blocked injectors)
Then She gradually started to pick up, so I'm thinking the injectors are starting to clear themselves
But after 30 Seconds there is No Oil Pressure on the Barrel Gauge, so at this point I don't quite know what to do
Should I try and run the Engine for a little bit longer?
Any Ideas?

if the battery has been disconnected it will take 30 seconds or so to run correctly as the senders and sensors have to get there message through to the ecu. has the wire come off the oil pressure sensor?
If the "idiot" light has extinguished, you have oil pressure. that light goes out at 8psi.
The main issue with these systems is the Smiths sender unit. It both leaks and is flaky at best.
Reach down the rear of the engine, remove the wire from the TOP sender (the bigger of the 2). Ign ON, earth that wire and note the dash gauge movement.
If a V12 has run for 30+ seconds without oil pressure, there would be some serious strange noises at the very least.
They can take a while to "prime up" but if that light is OUT., then there is oil pressure available.
A mechanical master gauge, threaded into the post where the light switch (smaller of teh 2) is the ONLY 100% way of determining what is happening.
At the age and mileage of any of your V12's, I doubt there is any more wrong that a sender being Female.

Hi Grant
The Fuel Gauge works OK
But I never thought of looking at the Oil Pressure Dash Light or the Idiot Light! Doh!
I was just focused on looking at the Barrel Gauge
But having said that 'I think all the Lights went out' (including the one in my head!)
So I will give her another try
Assuming the Idiot light and the Oil Pressure Light go out, 'which I'm pretty sure they did'
Do you think it would be OK to run her, say for about a minute or so, even if the Barrel Gauge isn't responding
Just having a quick cup of Tea, if you could get back ASAP

my barrel gauge is absolute toilet. its caused me a few soiled underwear moments when i first got the car. but after a new battery it performs a bit better but still drops to near zero sometimes,

Hi Grant
I did exactly what you told me and now the Barrel Gauge is working Perfect!
Genius or What!
Oil Pressure of 60psi and She is ticking over just like a little Swiss Watch, so now I can carry on with all the other bits and pieces that need doing
'The Wizard' works the Magic once again!

This in one of those rare cases where I'll be going away frommfactory and will be fitting a mechanical oil pressure gauge. There is one plugged off section in the rear oil pipe bracket. Ideal to fit an oi pressure gauge. Just to make sure works properly and to keep a good low blood pressure!
Alao, OB, what oil is in the sump of your Austin Princess (haha)? What grade? It should be 20W50. If the gauge shows nothing on idle when cold, then it will show absolutely nothing when warm...

When that engine hits 500K miles, we will talk innards, until then ENJOY.
I fitted a VDO sender on mine in 1995ish, and it is still there, NO leaks, NO silly readings, it just works, and then the fact I take very little notice of the instruments when driving, care factor is low.
Faith once more, I know my car/s, and it works for me.
This might help, and I think that sender is still available, but I have never needed another one, so have not inquired.

I am not worthy. It is blasphemy to mention a humble disciple's name in the same sentence as the Great XJS Prophet from the South. I know what I know because I have done it; but there are LOADS of things in the XJS that I have not done, and know NOTHING about!
By contrast the WOZ (turn and bow to the Southern cross at the mention of his Great Name) knows it ALL.
And now a Christmas treat for all you sorry XJS addicts:

But I will still be installing a mechanical pressure gauge when I am sometime ready
