Default Removing the AC evaporator

Any suggestions on how the access the AC evaporator? I've removed the center console, glovebox, and radio. The manual I have is very sketchy. It says I need to remove the fascia (dash). Is that really necessary and if so, how do you do it?

My service manual cd says that 76.46.01 shows how tgo remove the fascia. Unfortunateoy, the disk doesn't include that operation. Anyone have a copy?

I have a hard copy if no one comes up with a copy before Monday I'll take it work and scan it. My MFC is no-op at the moment.

cheers

THanks Warren. I've removed the two bolts on the bottom of the outside of the dash. Started removing the instrument panel. I just can't tell from the parts manual whether there are other bolts in there yet.

The last one I did was a 16 Hour Job. YES the entire 'dash' to the bulkhead must be removed to gain access to the climate control box.
Pinch the heater hoses and plug the metal line to prevent coolant from spilling into the cabin when the 'box' is hauled out the passenger door.

Default Removing dash

Well, I found the top bolts ... dash is loose and ready to come out. '

Did you have to drop the steering wheel to pull the instrument panel out to make room to get the dash out?

You need to remove the steering wheel. Here is an extract from the ROM

1 Remove pinch bolt securing steering wheel and adjuster mechanism to upper column
2 Slacken locknut and allen screw adjacent to pinch bolt.
3 Remove steering wheel and adjuster from upper column.

cheers
Warren

It's out. No mess since the coolant was drained from the engine already.

Took me 19 hours for the job. Much joy and many photo's and plastic baggies.

While you are in there check ALL of the vacuum lines and the vacuum valves. Use this opportunity to repair/replace/retrofit what you can while you have the dash disassembled.

It's a pretty daunting job both to take out, but especially to put it all back! I once helped a colleague do it on a 6 litre. It made me hope I would never have to do it on my car!

Here's a pic I found of a RHD HE car with the dash and aircon out. Be afraid, be very afraid!
