Default Trans mount "buffer plate" V12

In the following illustration please take a peek at item #9 "buffer plate".

Genuine Gearbox Mounting-5.3 Litre (5.3 Litre) For Jaguar Series Iii Saloon 1979 - 1992 Classic | Jaguar Land Rover Classic Parts

This is the part that complicate removing the transmission pan.

I've never been entirely clear on what purpose it serves. What happens if it...um.... isn't there?

I'm changing my trans pan (road damage) and it wouldn't hurt my feelings to leave this part on the workbench if I can !

Cheers
DD

From What I am seeing, it works with # 18 to limit the travel upward??

Thank you.

Doug,

Down here it was known as a "collision bracket", followed very closely by :B*&%tard Bracket", with many, many, too many, theories as to what it was meant to do/prevent.

We removed them, made pan removal a snap.

None of mine ever ran them, and nothing left the engine bay unexpectedly due to that. The fan blade had zero to with with it.

I’m putting the transmission mount bracket back in my V12 and plan to omit this collision bracket also, part #9. If I do that, are the bolts (part #16) still used? I’m away from the car at the moment but it seems like they went through the collision bracket and then through part 18. I will still use part 18 of course, but just trying to visualize the install before I tackle it.

Also, after much effort I still can’t get the new bush/spool to fit into the V shaped bracket. It’s a black rubber one from SNG. Should I have gone with poly? I’m either going to ask a local shop to try pressing this one in, or cut it in half horizontally and glue it into place.

Nope, at least down here.

#18 is also eliminated, and a suitable washer from the stash fitted onto the mount pin.
Memory, hahaha, I used the double welded washer from teh S2 6cyl mount pin, but that is purely sad memory.

#10 are reused with an additional washer or a huge oil leak will be your friend.

Whatever, its not rocket science, once you look at the bare basics of the mount.

I kept 18 and just cut off the front half.
I have never been able to get the poly cotton reel into the metal Y bracket. The OEM foam-like cotton reel is best IMO. As long as it is not oil soaked from leaks it lasts fine.

YES,

Thanks Greg for the kick start.

I cut that thing on a few also.

Poly is easy from the top with Silicon Grease (plumbers supplier), but, its been a long time since I played with one of these.

Thanks all for your help. I reused the bolts (part # 10) with an extra washer as Grant suggested, then left off number 9 (collision bracket), number 18 bracket and the bolts (16), and used an extra washer under the big nut on the spindle. Got it all back together and hope to not have to mess with the trans mount again for a while. I put a fresh trans filter and Moroso transmission pan on (per Greg’s recommendation) before getting this mount back on.

i still have to get the exhaust back in place and finish the rack bushing job before getting it back on the ground and adding the trans fluid, but making progress slowly.
