Wizard Radiator with Electric Fans - Shroud or No Shroud
Hello everyone,
I've seen many threads on shrouds/no shrouds for mechanical fans; however, I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on shrouds for electric fans.
Specifically, I'm looking at radiators from Wizard Radiator:
Wizard Cooling Inc #577-112BL 1976-1996 Jaguar XJS (V12) Aluminum Radiator w/ Fans (INCLUDES WIRING KIT) - WizardCooling.com
vs
Wizard Cooling Inc #577-113MD 1976-1996 Jaguar XJS (V12) Aluminum Radiator w/ Fans (INCLUDES WIRING KIT) - WizardCooling.com
These rads aren't cheap but I like the shift to the electric fans. The ones with the shrouds are $1k more....
Open to all feedback and it is much appreciated.

Shrouds not needed with electric fans, as the fan has its own shroud built in. Just mount them an inch from the matrix, that is important. Also forget the foam round the radiator, airflow through the engine bay is what you need!.
The two pictures show different number of hose connections with shroud / without shroud. Maybe its a generic picture? Make sure the one you order has the right number of fittings for the cooling hoses. Does it have a drain? If not, there might be a bit of work to fabricate a separate drain.

I don't know anything about the wizard stuff but generally speaking everything needs a shroud of some sort to function optimally. You see a lot of people just stick a round aftermarket radiator fan on the back or front of a radiator and if there is
excess capacity or the right conditions etc one might get away with it but you're only removing heat from the coolant where there is airflow so you're leaving some ability to do that on the table. Look at OEM designs on most any car for guidance, they
have done the hard work and science and generally point to the best way. Back in the 60's if not before you started to see rudimentary fan shrouds showing up in a lot of applications, that stuff has been fairly well understood for awhile.
One of the things a lot of folks do is find a factory fan off something that has a shroud that fits whatever radiator one is working with and use it, that gives you access to quality fans and well designed shrouds. They aren't usually very pretty though
and it's a bit of a guessing game on sufficient airflow. While I have had them fail, Spal makes quality fans but they are not cheap.

Good points. I ended up ordering one from wizard cooling with a shroud. Should arrive in 3 weeks.
