Hi there, I'd just like to give a big thanks to the contributors to the various threads regarding the dreaded Pedestrian Saftey System. You've just helped me crack the problem of replacing a faulty pedestrian warning sensor and I'm now warning free.
A couple of points that I'd like to add for what it's worth:
This image saved me a lot of confusion. As has been mentioned before, these are NOT the pedestrian warning actuators. Although the connectors are exactly the same and they can be plugged in. The image was posted by Ter11 in 2019 so THANK YOU.
There was simply no way I could get at the actuators from the top down as I believe is possible on the normally aspirated car. I couldn't even see them.
I did then remove the undertray - However, there was no way at all that I could actually get at the sensors due to the additional plumbing of the XK R (2012) again, as has been mentioned. That said, I could actually see the damn things, which helped me devise a plan to get at them.
This involved a bit of manhandling of the main grill and trim surround to allow me to get a socket onto the single bolts to remove and replace. It wasn't pretty, but I did manage to get the grill back and snapped in. I think I have sacrificed a couple of clips in the process, but the grill seems solid and time will tell if I've made an issue for myself.
As my car is a 2012 it has the newer single-hole activator. So these ones fail too!
It probably took me three or four hours spread over a couple of days with a whole lot of contemplation in between. I'd guess if I'd fathomed the grill entry solution, you could replace both of these sensors within the hour. More than half the battle was finding them so thanks again!
The revival of this thread drew my attention and I noticed the negative remarks about the system (and about pedestrians!). My two pence worth:
The system was designed to address new European safety legislation and Jaguar was the first manufacturer to meet it. The system deploys only at low speeds. When a pedestrian gets hit the crushable front bumper reduces the risk of serious leg injury - but the pedestrian still gets tipped over and lands flat on the bonnet, risking head injury. The deployable bonnet, popping up in 0.03 seconds, uses the airbags to absorb some of the impact force between the pedestrian and the bonnet as they collapse, reducing the risk of serious head injury. It works.
In 40+ years of driving, I'm glad to say I've never hit a pedestrian, and I hope I never will. Nevertheless I welcome the feature on my car and I'd never think of trying to disable it.
Hi all. I came across this thread as I have an issue in trying to reverse this bypass done by a previous owner.
My 2015 F-Type went into the dealer under extended warranty because after a year of ownership an error appeared “Check Pedestrian Protection System”
Upon checks the technician noticed there is a bypass with wiring both offside and near side latches and air bags have resistors fitted to bypass the pedestrian protection. They kindly did not tell Jaguar but said as it’s a mod this will need to be set back to factory settings before they will undertake any future warranty issues.
I booked in with a specialist to reverse the mod but they have zero knowledge and are talking about trying some refurbished airbags.
So my question is, is it a straight forward thing to reverse? Any advice or knowledge is appreciated.
OK Buckle up a bit of a long one short answer can you bypass it easily that is a yes!!!
So my alarm sounder on my 08 XKR was playing up, reading the forums here found the solution its location and thought a quick job to do. So step 1 should ahve been to disconnect the battery but I though car being off would be enough and I don't know if this would have made a difference. I removed the drivers side air bag under the bonnet, I did but did not cable tie the prongs together, again do not know if this was a cause to the impact system to light up, but you cannot get to the connector or to the alarm sounder. I needed to remove the bracket it sat on, easy enough 4 bolts but to slide out of the area its in there is not enough remove and to do so I removed the actuator and uplugged it, maybe this was the cause again do not know. So I switch out the sounder reinstall and conenct everything and check my car. The Check pedestrian impact system is lit up with the red warning.
Out come JLR SDD and thing maybe a clear DTC or system rest will work this out, but no success, I have trawled the internet and now know JLR SDD inside and out and maybe if there is an unlocked versio nthat can talk to topix and the internet then maybe but again do not know this. From the faults it was an issue wihthe the resistance which I dound with the b1004-96 error code whihc indicated the actuator. I thought maybe throw it into Jag and have themn reset it but now understand a actuator would be £170 for the part there abouts.
I read her and in other place that jag tech's plug in a device when working on SRS system so what would this do? Someone also said about a 2.2/2.5ohm resistor. I saw on an XF video someone removing the airbads and just pluggin a 10p resistor and that was it and this go me thinking. Through research I found I needed 2.5ohm 10w resistors so ebay/amazon specials here I come, but in the interim I keep thinking Jag Techs have a plug in deice surely they exist?
they arrived the other day and I have just needed a weather window to try it so, out came the air bag but the cable to plug this into is short, so I could try and connect this device and play with wiring if needed I removed the air bag mounting bracket again. Here is where I hit a hurdle, the pins on the plug are male and the SRS bypass modules I bought are also male. :-(
A bit of head scratching later I thought scotch locks and solder the other ends to the srs bypass module, the scotch locks did not bite through the coating on the air bag conenctor wires. I had used some heavier weight cable and insted found the male pins of the air bag conenctor snuggly fit inside my cable. So tis a win from that point but now was the moment of truth. I turned on the car. NO DAMN WARNING LIGHT!!!! :-)))
So I have tapped down conenctors and this little bypass module and put the air bag mounting bracket and air bag back. To further confirm the warnign light had gone close the bonnet etc and started the car. Confirmed no warning lights on the dash anymore, I can see my clock again :-)
I will see how my soldering and if my work around goes and if it stays connected, I did not want to remove the plug in case I did decide at some point to then spend £170. I wil lbe happy that with no lights showing when her MOT is due its one less thing to worry about.
Time to fit the £500+ of parts o nthe rear, new hubs, new upper and lower control arms drop links etc and a complete set of ABS sensors, somethign ABS related causes restricted performce but thats another story!!
