Default cracked Rim on my 2009 XKR Portfolio

My rear passenger tire started loosing air. I would fill it up and a couple weeks later the sensor would come on again. Thought it might be a nail so my auto guy lifted it and we found a small crack in the rim on the inside. Dealer wants 1300.00 for a new rim. Any suggestions where I might find one a little cheaper.

Yes certainly. Try the bone yard(s). Which wheel you have (model and rim size)? A pic of a healthy wheel would help if you can't identify it yourself.
2009 used the following that I'm aware of

Takoba 5-Spoke 20x8.5 front
Takoba 5-Spoke 20x9.5 rear

Carelia 10-Spoke 19x8.5 front
Carelia 10-Spoke 19x9.5 rear

Sabre Chrome 5-Spoke 19x8.5 front
Sabre Chrome 5-Spoke 19x9.5 rear

Senta 5x2-Spoke 20x9 front
Senta 5x2-Spoke 20x9.5 rear

Jupiter 5x2-Spoke 19x8.5 front
Jupiter 5x2-Spoke 19x9.5 rear

There of course, may be others

My 2009 XK had 20" Selena wheels and at 30,000 miles, 2 wheels cracked. I bought 4 new "Coventry Whitley Hyper-Silver With Mirror Cut Lip" wheels from Discount Tire for $320 each. That's 4 brand new wheels for about what the dealer wants for 1 wheel! I think they're the most beautiful wheels I've ever seen on any Jag. Just my opinion. You can check them out at ... coventrywheels.com

I also own a 2009 Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition.

This model came with the 20" Selena wheels.

I currently have aftermarket custom milled wheels on my 2009 XKR PE due to the Jaguar option Alcon braking system. I retained the complete set of the Selena 20" wheels and have them boxed and wrapped. Shipping would be from Las Cruces, NM 88011 via UPS.

I have my XKR listed on eBay for sale. If the vehicle does not sell, I will keep it and may consider selling the complete set of Selena wheels for $2400 + shipping ($600 each or reasonable offer). These would also include the Jaguar OEM XKR PE Center Caps in Jaguar red. These Selena wheels were taken off the XKR PE with about 13,500 miles on them and are the OEM Jaguar wheels. Shipping would be from Las Cruces, NM 88011 via UPS. Cost to ship to Texas would not be that much, probably 2 to 3 business day delivery.

My eBay ad ends Sunday night. If you have an interest let me know.

ILathrop,

If your 2009 XKR Portfolio is equipped with the optional Alcon Performance Brake Package, the Coventry Whitley wheels recommended by Snide72 won't fit. In that case, your best bet for a Selena wheel would be this forums For Sale Classifieds or eBay because Selenas were also used on the XF, but buyer beware! Get it in writing from the seller that the wheel is straight and has never had any structural damage or welds, and make sure that it is the correct width and offset. Alternatively, the Braelin wheels that Richzak has will fit. Use the Search function to learn more.

If your XKR doesn't have Alcons, the Coventry Whitley and other aftermarket wheels will fit.

I had two cracked rims within a couple of weeks of each other and had both of them repaired by a specialist in rim welding. My mechanic sent them out both times and they were repaired within 30 minutes on both occasions. I have had no problems with either since.

tberg,

You've been very lucky so far, because the structural integrity of the alloy rim at the point of the weld has been compromised. You'll be OK until you hit a pothole or two. Jaguar will not CPO a car with a welded rim because it is unsafe. How do I know? Because it happened to me. Within a week after I bought my CPO XJ, my TPMS warning showed low pressure in the right rear tire. My dealer replaced that rim because it had a slow leak coming from a small weld repair on the inside of the rim at the bead, and apologized for it being missed during the CPO inspection.

I wouldn't risk my life or the lives of my passengers or third parties by driving on a welded rim. Think about it - the cost of a new rim is peanuts compared to the legal liability for personal injury or death caused by negligence by knowingly and intentionally driving on an unsafe welded rim. Better safe than sorry.

While it's true a non-welded/repaired rim is aways preferred, I have run a repaired (welded) rim on an XJ-R for a number of years without issue. Obviously, the reputation, skill, and certification of the welder needs to be considered.

If your welder says that your repaired rim will be safe, try getting him to put his money where his mouth is. Ask him to give you a written indemnification agreement and also name you as an "additional insured" under his commercial liability insurance policy. An ice cube stands a better chance of survival in Hell!

Read the fine print on your welder's invoice. It probably excludes any warranty and says that the customer assumes all risks, will hold the welder harmless and will indemnify him against claims by third parties.

Red Ryder is right, the choice is yours. I just don't understand how he can advocate riding on a welded rim when the last words in his signature are "Safe Motoring".

I've had my say and am done

My 2009 Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition did not sell, so the complete set of Selena 20" wheels are available if anyone might be interested. These are the OEM Jaguar wheels.

Selena wheels as seen in Post #4 above.

Jaguar is crazy not to offer more affordable wheel packages. If they were half the price, they'd sell 4x as many!
