Default current gear display

One minor annoyance on my 2008 is that the gear display won't tell you what gear you're in - unless you change up or down. A couple of times I've done a couple of quick taps on the down shift and ended up in 1st where, if I'd known it was in 3rd I might have only flicked it once

I'm sure I've seen a pic of a 2010 dash with a big number in the display between the spedo and rev counter.

That is EXACTLY why I stopped playing with the paddle shifters. I would flick the paddle one time to downshift one gear, then jam the gas to pass some slow moving truck. Well, as soon as I did that, the car would drop down a couple more gears on its own! Next thing I knew, I was in second or third going WAY to fast to only be in 2nd or 3rd gear. Engine now screaming, pictures of fried transmissions would then pass in front of my eyes as I scrambled to put the thing back into fully automatic mode.

That just ain't right...

Mine will highlight the gear you are in when tapping them. I think it will downshift if it sees that it can but mine still will show the gear it goes into if it shifts down it's self. I did read that there was a change in the actions of the paddles starting in 08 on the XF. I don't know if that carried over to the XK or not.

The big numbers in the display show up when in S mode with the performance button on. Otherwise, when you do a gearshift, it has a smaller number it shows near the top of the LCD until it goes back into 'auto' mode.
