Default Cylinder locations

I have two missing firing cylinders. According to the manwell:

The right hand cylinder bank is designated as 'A' bank, and
the left hand as 'B' bank. The cylinder bores are numbered from 1 to 4, for bank 'A' and 5 to 8 for
bank 'B', starting from the front of the engine (for more information refer to the Vehicle Specification
Book (VSB))

Is bank A right hand looking from the front of the engine or from the drivers point of view? Did a search and didn't find a conclusive answer.

It looks to me that bank A is right side looking at the engine.from the front of the car.

If reported via OBD, use the OBD definition of which is where.

(Does correspond with what's posted I think. And international standards.)

The answer to this and many other regular questions, is in the XK/XKR - 'How To' / DIY Repair & Maintenance sticky' thread at the top.

In this instance, Cylinder Numbering is in Section 5 - Engine.

The problem Graham is that pic is for a 5.0 litre engine does not compare with the written explanation in the manual for the 4.2 L engine.

This is still confusing for me Steve - the manual (The cylinder bores are numbered from 1 to 4, for bank 'A') aligns with the 4.0 L engine but not the 4.2 L engine:

Ok - I think I figured dis out maybe - I searched in the pdf for right hand:

References to Bank-1 and Bank-2 are made with regard to the engine. When viewed from the
flywheel the right-hand bank will be Bank-1 and the left-hand bank will be Bank-2.

And just to confuse even us English:

The right hand cylinder bank is designated as 'A' bank, and the left hand as 'B' bank.

One can certainly bank on the manwell descriptions.

Bank of England....lmao.

To confuse matters jlr changed the numbering of their cylinders on the 4.2 whilst the 4.4 for the range rover & the 4.3/4.7 reverted back to the old 4l cylinder numbering....to further confuse the matter due to the cylinder numbers being different the firing order is different however the firing order sequence remains the same ....the only reason I can see that the 4.3/4.4 and 4.7 reverted to the old cylinder numbering is to differentiate from the jaguar brand / engine and have their own exclusivity.
