Got bad flood damage from the recent hurricane Helene. I'm not on site but I'm told there was 18 inches of water in the house and would guess a similar amount in the garage where my XK vert sits. Any ideas what kind of damage it may have sustained?
THANKS
If you can gain access quickly then 1st job is disconnect the battery. You don't want the electrical modules & wiring connectors to be have accelerated corrosion. 18" can compromise many modules that are at floor level. Remove the rubber grommets in the floor pan which should drain the water in the passenger area.
Since probably salt water, be prepared for a total loss.
After Hurricane Helene on Longboat Key FL. about 2 1/2 feet of water in the garage. The '08 XJ8 got pretty wet.
My housekeeper got in today and unhooked the battery, said the water drained out on it's own, but noted the cup holder was full of water. I'll get my own eyes on it tomorrow, but for this '08 I don't have much hope. But, any advice is appreciated!
Freddy 'Tavarish' I don't know his last name on Youtube bought a flooded P1 from a hurricane and he cleaned it completely three times, took it entirely apart and cleaned it again, and there was STILL sand in places.
Sucks for you, man. Even that spare wheel looks like toast. Plus the other four, that's half the insurance payout right there.
It's sad when XKs die.
I've never had this happen to my car - thankfully - but I do have experience of people spilling drinks into mixing desks and other electronics in recording studios. Once the liquid is dried out, the board seems to work fine but the minerals that were dissolved in the liquid remain - hidden under components and inside connectors etc. These corrode the boards, but gradually, and the board starts to fail weeks or even months later.
My condolences to anyone here who had flood issues with their Jag (and certainly if they suffered any other property damage or more importantly, personal injury).
Efforts of save a water flooded, especially salt water flooded, car is a waste of time. If the water got up into the car and any electronics/electrical components, unfortunately it's going to be totaled, and rightly so. Draining water from a flooded car is not going to save it. Any car that's experienced flooding and is 'dried out" is going to have problems for the rest of its life.
This is why many people recommend not to by a Florida car, especially after a hurricane and for the foreseeable future after.
If you get a hankering, you can part out some of the interior plastics above the flood line anything that isn't electronic. Vents, Fascia, that sort of thing. A few hundred bucks the insurer won't miss and I gotta believe money matters to you about now. Sorry for the loss.
