Default Has anyone ever had brake squeak like this

Ok I’m about to go insane. Well I am already at Witt’s end. Front rotors and pads just replaced , pretty sure my pad clips were stretched so I’ll get that sorted but I was hoping the squeak was my fronts. Turns out it’s my backs, now what’s crazy is it not when I’m braking it’s just driving slow speeds and exaggerated when I turn right more than left. I was told we have floating rotors so they will touch ever so slightly even when not braking , is this true ? It obviously squeaks when braking too. Question is , anyone else squeak when not braking but at lower speeds. I have brembo ceramics on order to match the front. The rears were replaced before I bought it but at a dealership in van MCL which is a high end place. I spoke to the service department and they have it in the computer that was done at 81km .. I bought it with 83km and I’m now at 95km. So the rotors should have plenty of life .. same as the pads but I imagine the dealer put non ceramic maybe. Anyhow also a question is what sort of things should I do when adding new pads to rotors with 14km on them ? I’m hoping this can be done and the pad will form to the rotor ? And the squeak will go ? Or will it squeak still because it’s not formed together from new ie the rotor and pads at the same time. Or is something else a issue as it’s brutal. This is also once the pads are heated of course. Morning no squeal.

I would get your buddy the independent guy on this - they should be able to diagnose pretty fast.

I don't pop on here very often anymore but I did just have the same problem.

OK, so I bought my most recent XKR (I've had several) in Nov 2022 and replaced the pads and rotors in Feb 2023. I have used the Brembo ceramics on my other Jags and were pretty happy with them in that they didn't throw off a lot of dust and they were pretty quiet. I put Jurid's on the front.

Fast forward to Feb 2025 and I get the low pad warning. I check and, sure enough, the rears are worn to the point where they needed to be replaced...after less than 20k miles. The rotors looked just fine so I did something that I have NEVER done before (40+ years of working on cars). I chose not to replace them. Mistake.

Within a few miles I was getting the exact same noise you were. Squealing/noise when just rolling along at 20 mph. Not when actively braking. So, even though I applied anti-squeal compound when I installed the pads, I pulled them and redid it. Waste of time.

The answer was to replace the rotors. Since the Brembos wore so quickly, and I have been super happy with the Jurid's on the front (that still don't need to be replaced), I went with Jurid pads on the rear.

New rotors, new Jurid pads, and a quiet Jaguar.

TLDR: Even when the rotors look good, replace them (depending on where you live, it may be possible to have them machined...but (most) rotors are so inexpensive that I don't bother). Use quality pads with anti-squeal compound. I bought my rotors on Rock Auto for less than $90 with shipping (they were a manufacturer clearance but ended up being CarQuest). The pads were $39 from RockAuto w/ shipping.

Hope this helps.

Ah, yes the Alcons are a different animal. It looks like you are in Victoria. It's a great city but not huge so this might be a bit of a longshot but it might pay to call/ask around and see if there's any "old school" machine shops on the island that can still resurface them.

I've never done this myself because (non-Alcon) rotors are so inexpensive but I have heard of people getting good results doing it by hand. This guy says that it is the residual bed-in material that is probably causing the squeal.

I totally get the embarrassment aspect! Best of luck and reply back when you get it sorted; I'll be curious to know the outcome.

Otherwise known as "Deglazing". It does work as long as it's done evenly and enough. It won't help any (I'm gonna get some flak for this, but it's an actual thing) warping on the rotor though.
I'd highly recommend having the rotors turned instead, as long as there is enough material to do so.

Wow good stuff.

so for a newbie, how does one tell the diff between std, brembo and Alcon?
looking at a 2007 XKR today, so I understand if one of those don’t apply.

Although I've owned several R-Types, I wouldn't say that I am an expert on this topic so others can chime in and correct me if I am wrong:
1. Brembo calipers: I had them on my 2005 XKR and my 2003 XJR R1. I don't believe they were offered on 2007+ XKR's but they may have been offered on the XKR-S and XKR-S GT...but I am not 100% confident in this.
2. Alcon: If memory serves, they were only offered on 2008-2009 XKR's. Regardless, they are pretty easy to spot as they are HUGE and they have a raised (cast in) R logo (as opposed to a decal). The front Alcons have six(!) pistons and the rears have 4.
Some great pics of the Alcons can be found here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...brakes-122320/

Just did front brakes w/ EBC kit (Red Stuff pads and rotors). Only 20 miles so far (gentle braking for another 80 to go). Looking forward to some spirited driving. The loud metal to metal sound (driving, no braking) was unexpected but it's part of the pads bedding in.

Still need to do rear brakes. Are inexpensive rotors worth considering?

So what do I need to budget for those when the time comes?

Depends on what you want to do. For my R (non Alcon), I went w high performance front pads/rotors. EBC kit was 500 + install.
