Default High pitch whine

Have a new higher pitch sound coming from the engine bay upon start up and with driving. I've read that typically it's one of 3 issues 1. Belt 2. Water pump (replaced last year) 3. Alternator. Anything you guys can think of that is known to affect our XK's? It's the same sound like when you have a radio on an a.m. station and you use an appliance nearby (older guys will get that one!)...

Older guys???

you missed the belt tensioner. Its still all hypothetical until you get a stethoscope down there.

Yep more likely an idler/tensioner pulley bearing is on it's way out, stethoscope/long screwdriver to test running, or remove the belt and spin pulleys by hand.

My generator gave up the ghost just last year.
To be fair, the modern oem denso generator lasted 18 years and 180,000 kms. I’m impressed.
Still on the original water pump!
I think the 3rd tensioner… I don’t really remember as my memory is getting foggy.

Once you locate it and plan to change it, that will be the second item changed in that area. So while there, change a few other things! Idler pulley, tensioner, and especially the belt, for a cheap repair.

To remove the alternator, one must remove the motor mount. Thus worthwhile changing it. And having an alternator in hand, or you will stay on the lift, until you do have one.

Diagnosed as that alternator. Picked up a new Duralast. Being installed today. Thanks for the tips, guys and gals!

Appreciate the input! If it helps, Jaguar alternators in the era of our XK's, were manufactured by Denso or Bosch. The Duralast alternator I chose is manufactured by Denso. Hopefully, it works out!
