Default Instrument Cluster Removal?

Has anyone ever removed the Instrument Cluster? I need some help in how to do it. Is this DYI or should I have a Pro do it?

I have read the Workshop Manual and I have questions:

1) First, do I need to disconnect the battery to remove the Cluster?

2) The manual starts off with the removal of the instrument panel driver's side reinforcement trim panel by releasing 4 clips. What is this "Panel"? Is this the wood piece below the instrument cluster? How do you release the clips?

2) It next say's to protect the surrounding trim from damage when changing the component. I guess they are talking about the instrument cluster surround. What technique do you use to protect the trim?

3) It next says to raise the steering column finisher for access to the lower screws to remove the instrument cluster. How to you raise the steering column finisher? Does it just pull up or is there a technique to raising it?

Help is much appreciated?

Ken

I did this a week ago when removing my dash to have leather reworked. It's an easy process to remove cluster. First before disconnecting battery move the steering wheel down and out as far as it will go to allow you more room to work. Then lay a towel over your steering wheel so not to accidentally scratch or damage it. Wood trim pieces pop straight out, I used a plastic pry tool to help get started and used my hands being careful not to scratch or break wood panels. There is a hidden screw at the top of the instrument panel trim, use a small flathead or pick to remove small cover to access screw, remove bottom screws on instrument trim as well to remove trim to gain access to 4 small bolts holding cluster in place, remove those and pull out cluster enough to unplug wiring harnesses. 2) I think what the manual means is to take care of item once you remove, so that it doesn't get damaged, some of the clips that hold the wood piece on may be on the tabs of the wood panel after removing, I found that it was better to pull clips off and snap them back into holes on dash rather than having them on wood panel when reinstalling 3) I just removed the column finisher, its held in place by plastic tabs and two springs, but I don't think it necessary, you can just lift with your fingers and get access to bottom screws...
