Default Miss fire in park

Hi guys newbie here.

My 2009 XKR (bought just before Christmas last year) had a poor start up this morning - bit of a cough and splutter.

I warmed the car up and then placed the car in park and revved her - at 4500 rpm the engine is spluttering (almost like a limiter was kicking in)

I took the car for a spin down the highway in sport mode and the car runs perfectly revs right up to the red line - holding the car at 4500 rpm under load no issues. Even after a blast down the highway same thing in park when revving the car up.

Any ideas? - Thanks, Mac.

That's because you are hitting the rev limiter whilst in park or neutral, it's there by design.

Thanks Jim - I thought/was hoping that may be the case - I've never tried revving the car in park so high before.

I can breath again now...

Yep, been there done that. Bucking like a bronco, and belching smoke like crazy.
Forum set me straight, and then I found it in the manual too.

The next thing is I'm getting check tire pressures from all 4 sensors - If I let the car sit overnight - they are ok - after running for 30 mins or so I get the warning message.

It looks to me like the batteries are all going at the same time (7 years) - the local tire shop read the batteries as OK )no actual voltage reading though) - I've been reading the threads on the TPMS - everybody seems to have had issues.

I bought one of the Chinese Mongoose units and loaded up the SDD software - works good for 24 hours then I need to reload the software - the fix the mongoose guy in China does not work for "freezing" the installation.

I will check the tire sensors with the SDD when I have some time.

Because the start up in the morning was all spluttery,it hasn't done that before. So I took her for a short drive to warm it up then tried a rev up when I got back home.

I kind of see this as maybe 2 different issues. First on cold startup in my opinion there should be no sputter or roughness in idle. During startup the system is in open loop and the ECM calls for a richer mixture and a higher idle speed of around 1200-1500 rpm. I would expect the idle during warm up to be smooth and up in that rpm range. When the cats warm up and the system goes into closed loop the idle drops to around 600 rpm and it should be very smooth. Now the 4500 rpm rev and the rev limiter is new to me so I'll have to look it up in the OM. I do find it surprising that the rev limiter would kick in but as I mentioned I'll look at understanding how it works. This I would call a 2nd question. I assume you have no codes either present or pending?

When I did it, as a new owner of my XK, I wanted to see if I could hear the exhaust note change when the rear baffles opened up under increased exhaust pressure. When trying to push the RPMs past 4500, that rev limiter kicking in scared the bejeebers out of me , as I thought I had some major problem with the car.

No longer an issue since fitting the XKR exhaust, as they're always open, and sounding loverly.

Yup, I had the same panic too! Oh crap, I just bought a newer more reliable car and now its broken already!

Owners manual cleared it up for me.

A 2009 would be due for a fuel filter change is if hasn't been done already.

I couldn't find anything in the OM or the service manual on an RPM limiter - not to say there isn't a limiter.

Our new truck at work has a rev limiter which works quite smoothly not like what I had with the Jag.

Last time I had the SDD up hooked was Saturday - just a few nuisance codes only - nothing to do with the engine.

I'm at 70,543 kilometers - I'd have to look at when the fuel filter is due and check the service records.

Mac.

If it hasn't been done, its due. Interval is Seven years. My 2009 would start a little rougher than I thought it should of sometimes, I saw no record of a fuel filter change. Changed fuel filter, problem gone.

It is on my to do list, I'll get one on order and swap it out - It doesn't look that complicated in the manual.

See post #8 in this thread:

Which is a quote from the owner's manual's "Transmission" section. You'll find it as a note under the 'Shift inhibit' paragraph.

Thanks KJ - never thought of looking in the transmission section - I guess I need to read the OM cover to cover..

It makes sense - it would be really easy to over rev the car in park and possibly cause damage with a heavy foot..
