In order to retain the British voice, will using the 2nd disk (maps) work WITHOUT performing the update (1st disc)? I really want to keep that voice. But would like new maps....a lot of roads have been built around here in the last 7 years.
Cambo has already done this and I'm pissed at myself for not remembering. He was able to burn newer maps and here are his findings at the time
ALLDATA.KWI = appears to be map information
DICVCE56.KWI = illegible data
INDEXDAT.KWI = specific index linking to the data files in the IDX folder, don't mess with this
LOADING.KWI = the actual software to run the touchscreen
METADATA.KWI= language options for the touchscreen
REGION.KWI = appears to be map data
SPEC.KWI = refers back to the metadata
VAR256D.KWI = illegible data
Based on this I can burn a few experiments. Use the old metadata file to keep the British voice, for example. I'll make this goal one since finding current KWI files (2018) in MMM2 is going to take some time. As I've done some digging and you all know auto manufacturers and going with online updates. The freaking KWI file software appears to be sealed tighter than the Manhattan Project. bit torrent software out on the dark web is not of interest to me either so I'll steer clear, thank you.
Lastly, in that thread, Cambo noted that the disks burn out quickly (quickly is relative) as the commercially made ones are pressed, homemade ones are burned. Remember, these disks are spinning constantly.
Ultimately you'll have to decide what's important to you but I can glob on to Cambo's work and see what we can come up with.
I suspect you can revert back to your original Jag disks if you don't like the outcome.
Sean, that info was for the older nav system in the X-Type, S-Type and X350.
The MMM2 system is much more complex, I haven't looked at it in much detail yet aside from the LOADING.KWI because that has the key in it to unlocking navigation on the move.
But in any case as a project it's way over my head, and the guy who has the know-how with this stuff has a million other projects on the go.
Yeah thanks, I knew it was a different project but hoping it's a similar process. Freakin .kwi files are locked up tighter than the Manhattan project. It's just navigation. What's the worst that could happen?
I've recently bought one off eBay for £29.99,works absolutely fine. It was Europe tho.
Yes it appears there are a few options in Europe but there are none in the U.S. or Australia that we know of.
FYI, I received the Volvo disks from KJ but having my house painted and carpeting installed so I'm a ways out from drilling down. I did peak at the "Metadata" file which doesn't actually appear to contain any real metadata given the file size, but the languages are listed in there and UK English is among them.
This is long term work for me and not sure I can accomplish anything but I'll keep you in the loop. I'm still on the lookout for a file viewer that can view .kwi files.
No news means I haven't tackled it yet or I'm still working on it. I hope to return yours to you in a few weeks KJ.
If your local dealer is going to have to order it, why not just order it yourself. I looked on line and found several dealerships selling on line for a reduced price.
Many thanks to Cambo for pointing out that the 2016 Volvo discs will work with the XK, Ranchero50 for researching the correct US part number, and old_dawg for providing a link to a Volvo dealer selling discounted parts. I received my discs yesterday and they work great on my 2007!
(I don't use the voice feature as I don't need the car talking to me, so I don't care whether or not certain languages work.)
Tried this but thanks anyway. You have to be a member of the consortium to gain access and membership is not an easy process, nor do I work for the limited companies allowed to apply.
As far as I can tell, I can't locate a Datawest CD either.
Hey Jagtoes. I assume you're referring to UK English. Did you upgrade your Navigation using the Volvo discs?
No update just the 2012 version that came with the car. Around here I don't think it would make any difference so I got what I got. If I need to be more specific or concerned about a location I'd use my cell and google maps.
I surrender. I asked a couple of developer friends to take a look. They can't dedicate the time.
Bottom line for the US version and the Brit voice, while she's there as a selection, the voice isn't actually loaded. Press it, you get silence. You're stuck with the American voice.
Also, based on current tech (stamped vs burned DVD's) and the lock down of KWI files, this isn't worth the time. The DVD issue was investigated by Cambo some time ago. Nothing's changed. I'd have to hire a blackhat to go further.
Google maps works for me and they have a British voice.
Maybe future tech will come along and allow us to replace the NAV DVD player or retro fit USB, but nothing I see on the horizon.

Before I get the last Volvo disc for x150, does it change the screen saver logo?
So when you hit the power button and it goes to the Jaguar logo screen saver, does the disc change that?
I see that the British voice is lost but nothing about the screen saver.
Fantastic thread ... so, as of today 9-5-2021. is this the latest DVD from Volvo that will update my 2009 XK to the latest maps ... but, without the British female voice?

Correct and yes through 2016. If you live in a well developed area, not much changes. If you use it for road trips, yeah it's almost 6 years old but still better than your 12 year old one. I will say though, I do prefer the British voice bossing me around.
