Good evening gentlemen. I'm hoping there is someone who could offer some advice on a very small oil leak my 2009 XK has with 60,000km on the clock. A year ago I discovered a drip of engine oil sitting on the very bottom of the bellhousing. I wiped it away and checked again 500km later and found the same drip back sitting there. During an inspection at he local dealership I was informed that it was most likely the rear seal and quoted $2000 to replace it.

My questions are would it be worth while trying an engine stop leak product and or to leave it as is? (I'm surprised the engine developed a leak considering the mileage to be honest.) There are no oil spots on the ground and it doesn't seem any worse over the 10.000km I've driving.

Any advise or opinions would be very much appreciated.

You can try a stop leak product however that is only evere going to be temporary solution to the problem , inevitably the gearbox will need to be removed and a new seal seal fitted to the rear of your engine.

Worthy note once the gearbox is out of the way this would be a perfect opportunity to gain access to the duck bill.

 

Was there a duckbill issue on the 2009's I thought it was cured with a new set-up on the 5.0 engines?

Brian, I have to keep reminding myself that your in NZ, can you please include this in your signature to make our lives easier, only guessing as you talk in KM and $, which would make you either Canadian or else from the Antipodes.

$2000 NZ (IIRC) is around £950gbp/$1270USD which seems a little steep but not adversely so, but you may be limited by the number of garages with the capability in your locale.

I paid £900GBP for a recon box (supplied by me at a cost of £600gbp) to be fitted to my old XK8 couple of years ago, that included all new seals/gaskets/filters/fluid, but then I have two jag specialists within 10 miles of me

Brian is this an engine leak or a rear diff leak you do not make this clear. if a rear diff leak it will be cheap to fix any good indy garage will replace the seal and top the oil back up for a few hundred dollars it aint a big job

 

Hi George. Yes, you're right it isn't clear. The leak is at the mating of the engine to the bellhousing. I've just been to a transmission shop and they can replace the main seal and service the transmission at the same time for $1600 all up (800 pounds) The Jaguar dealership priced the repair at $2000 for just the rear seal replacement. I just thought it was unusual to have this kind of leak at the mileage the car has done. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

 

It wasn't sorted until part way through the 2010 model year so some of the early 5 litres will have the issue too as well as the last of the 4.2's.

I would personally let it drip rather than put a sealant into the lubrication system. I would worry about what else is being sealed and clogged/restricted.

 

I would do more investigation before just having the rear seal replaced. As I assume we all know that you need to remove the transmission from the car to replace the rear engine crankshaft seal. This is major work so before I would even consider that I would search for the source. Clean under the car and put some die in the oil and star looking.
