Make sure the contacts in the fob are actually contacting the battery, may need to bend them a bit to get a good connection.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! I'm fairly certain they are making good contact. I actually DID bend them up a bit..The key is quite worn & I have ordered a new one (from China), So,I will have to move the electronics from my current fob to the new fob. Do you think that was wise??

Also, the Smart Keys are just a finicky about voltage as these danged cars. Make SURE you get a good, new 2032 battery in it. Nice and fresh.

Set it on the console which is close to the receiver. I had trouble when the battery went low if it was in my left pocket but fired right up in the right one...

If your cellphone is in your pocket with your Smartkey, the Smartkey signal can be blocked. I keep my Smartkey in my right front pocket along with a handkerchief and nothing else.

The back of the Smartkey case was modified because of problems with the early ones where there wasn't sufficient pressure to keep the battery firmly on the contacts.

I really would NOT buy a Chinese copy. Replacement cases and chrome trims are available from Jaguar and make the Smartkey look like new again.

C2P15135: Silicon matt (buttons)
C2P17158: Housing (lower)
C2P15136: End cap cover (chrome)

Cost me less than 20 UKP.

Did you have good luck with the China ones and reprogramming the keys?

The OP didn't reprogram his fob. He simply moved the innards from his OEM outer shell to a new shell from China. No programming necessary.

It appears that the OP isn't active on this Forum. He made only 4 posts, and the last one was his Post #3, above, more than a year ago.

Just had this problem the day before yesterday Came to my car in the afternoon, open the door with the key fob, got inside, car would not start and I got the key fob warning on the dash. Often if I have the fob in my left hand, I get the warning and when I bring it closer to the console it will start right up. Nothing worked, this time. And though the battery in the fob was only a couple months old, I took another car and went down and got another one. After putting it in, there was still no response. I made sure the contact points surrounding the battery were bent up making good contact with it, but still no start and key fob warning. I opened the case again and noticed there is another small metal contact on the upper left side that is so small, I could barely see it. I bent that double contact more upright, closed up the key fob, and everything returned to normal. I have had no issues since.

Wow good to know. I just put batteries in mine and 1 out of every 3 drives I get "key fob not found" I'm like wth!! It scares me because at any given moment you can be stranded. I always have the manual with me I know you have to do some tricks in case the fob dies but I'll look into bending that little tab soon.. Thx

You can't be stranded. In the center console there's a socket where you can insert your key. The key has an RFID chip in it. The RFID chip works even f the battery is completely dead, but the RFID chip has to be in that socket.

Try it. Take the battery out of the fob. You will have to use the metal key to unlock the door, but you'll still be able to start the car by putting the fob in the socket in the center console.

Rev Sam,
That slot may work with a dead battery, however, I stuck my fob into it ten times with no effect. So, the contact, even to a dead battery has to be there. I could not start the car, period!

Thank you for this post; after several days and attempts mine is working now. Saved me hundreds of dollars by avoiding a new key

Sherrk,

Bending the prongs to make better contact is risky, as they are brittle from age and are easily broken. If that happens, you'll have to buy a new Smartkey and have it programmed.

It's safer to make a small shim from aluminum foil to fit under your new CR2032 battery to make better contact.
