Default Struggling to Demist Windows?

Hi guys,

Any suggestions as to why my 2010 MY XK is an absolute swine of late to keep the windows from steaming up? I have checked the carpets and they are bone dry so don't believe the infamous duckbill to be the issue.

The only way to keep the windscreen clear is to have the heated screen on and fan on maximum and blowing onto the screen. Even once the car is upto temperature, if I put the AC/HVAC to auto then the car will mist up again. I had the aircon regassed last summer and always have the aircon on which should act as a dehumidifier.

Thanks in advance,

Russ

This is your problem. JTB00380 Check the pressures as described and then replace the valve if pressures are backwards.

What Mufc said.
Also if that isn't it, is there a smell of coolant also? Off-chance the heater core has a pinhole leak and sprays coolant into the EC passages. This used to be a quite more likely scenario fifty years ago. Not so much any more.

As you've eliminated AC duckbill blockage and the interior is dry, it must be from water and not condensate.

If the car has been standing out in the incessant rain we've had in England, check the wiper grille drain holes directly below the wiper arms are clear and also the drain holes in the bottom corner of each bulkhead extension.

Brake fluid and Bleeder not required but I wasn't going out to take a specific photo at this time of night.

In my XE I had a blender valve (or something called similar) that had to be replaced and had similar issues. Car was unsafe to drive in the cold weather until they fixed it.

Thank you for the replies everyone, certainly plenty of things to explore there. I'll look into them over the weekend and report back any findings once I've delved a little deeper.

In my recent experience, this is due to the aircon not being operative. Demisting in cold weather hardly happens at all even at full temperature on heater if the dehumidifying ability of the aircon is not available. I know you say you have checked this. but suggest you check again. I suppose there might also be an algorithm that turns off the aircon if the heater doesn't heat fully, because the result would be colder air, so maybe check the heater is fully functional too.

+1 on making sure you have the AC on.

Gassing of the dash from various cleaners and protectants often coats the inside of the windshield and causes it to fog up excessively. As suggested above, a thorough cleaning does wonders in preventing fogging.

I will give the windscreen a real good clean this weekend whilst investigating a few of the points listed above, hopefully the clean and some regular use of the car will help (the lockdown and current weather has meant the XKR has seen very little use in recent weeks/months)

Thanks again everyone, I'll pop an update in once I've given the car some TLC this weekend.
