Default U.K. Backup lights

Hey guys,

The forum has been great this summer. Thanks for all the help.

Does anyone know the UK backup light part number for the driver side? Would I just splice the new light into the factory passenger side backup light?

Lots of Valet in the area and I'm tired of telling my friends that the car only came with one light lol.

Thanks,
Joe

See this thread, particularly posts ##38 & 44: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-07-xkr-36072/ Installation and wiring isn't hard, but you have to be careful to not break off the pointed tip. Used ones occasionally show up on ebay.co.uk for around $25 plus shipping.

For a brand new one from the UK, Forum Sponsor SNG Barratt may be able to help. Note that they give Forum members a 10% discount: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/v...tt-usa-108135/

To my knowledge, the 2007 to 2009 XKR has the one "back-up light". The other side is a rear fog light.

If you want to activate the "fog light" there is a "push button" on the left side behind the steering wheel on the lower dash.

I think if you try to make the fog light into a "back-up light" you may lose the ability to use the fog light.

Here's an image of the switch and it is easy to find, in the same place as the release fuel door.

You may want to read this thread.

If just changing the fog to backup light, you don't need to worry about the 'tip' on the outer lamp housing, as you're only replacing the inner lamp unit on the trunk lid. Should be able to wire it in parallel with the lamp on the other side.
Until I got my XK, I'd never heard of a rear fog light, not too common here in the US, so you probably won't miss it.

I push my rear fog light button when another driver behind me is to close for comfort. A few on and off's via the button usually makes then wonder, "What in the hell is that?". Perhaps they think a sensor picks up their car too close to mine and signals a warning.

Other than that, I have never had the need to use the rear fog light. Here in New Mexico we hardly ever see fog, usually only a few days each year.

Haven't had that issue yet, as I either use the 'go' peddle, and put a lot of distance between us, or move over and let the bugger by. But I'll see if I can remember to try your idea if I were to get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

That's a great idea. Never thought of that. Last week, a Lambo appeared from nowhere and rode my tail for about 30 seconds before I moved over to let him by. As he passed me, he gave me a big smile and a thumbs up. It was Mike Myers.

Been there, done that!
Very simple to splice into rh BU light ('07 coupe). Works great; could not find my post(around Dec-Jan 2011).
Only problem I had was Ebay UK seller did not want to ship to US...........so had it shipped to grand-daughter in UK who sent it on via military postal system.

Think part no was 238 041-017 or 6W83 512500BF.............. I think I paid about $50.

Hope this helps! never have much luck with the SEARCH option, sorry.

Good luck
Cheers, Adrian

Hi Joe,

I believe you only have 2 options, rewire the harness & replace/resolder the fog red LEDs with white LEDs or upgrade to the 2010+ LED tailights. I updated mine with parts from SNG Barrett & instructions from George Kale (posted on this forum) and makes the car look a lot better IMHO. Total cost plus misc parts from Radio Shack was around $1K. If you need help let me know.

Well, I guess that makes three options, with the third being what was mentioned in the previous posts (get a LH inner lamp unit from the UK).
Personally, I'd think that wiring in individual replacement LEDs would be a PITA, and probably wouldn't match the other side.
I too liked the 2010+ look, and did the George Kale upgrade. Looks great.

I, on the other hand, disliked the single fog, and bought a UK fog for my '07.
However I just upgraded to a 2010, and I hadn't installed it yet so my task is moot. (well other than my 2010 right hand fog LEDS are dead, and I have to buy that unit now as well... Yeash!)

My feeling is that the fogs are so bright, that two of them is more than adequate to function as backup lights as well as fogs.... Two diodes is all it should take to make them work under both functions.
