I was testing that yesterday and stuck my finger over it while I was talking but it made no difference in sound for my wife. But then I stuck my finger over the thing in the roof cluster too, and that didn't change either. And the little plastic thing in the fascia under the instrument cluster. I've been putting my finger everywhere, and none the wiser :-(

It is in the A-Pillar as far as I have researched.
I was stunned to drop the overhead console (changed the yellow LED to red) to see both openings I thought were mic locations to be completely blank. This is where my Audi, and Lexus both had them, but Jag chose differently. I have not moved any further on my quest for a better mic, but up thee is where i will place it!
Schwabe, I believe the item you show is the "TSB Repair, where they relocate the mic from behind the pillar to outside the pillar...

The A-pillar...I thought I was the only one who really had no idea what that thing was. This makes me feel better. Really do not understand the design here though other than directly (sort of) to the driver but that is always assuming the driver is the one talking. As mentioned here, previous cars have always been in the center upper console which seems like the logical spot. A-pillar is fine but why not something a bit more flush mount?
As a point of reference, my 2002 Chevy Tahoe has this same exact "mount", only it is mounted in the center upper console.....

Even though I went straight to the manual I still never saw that! Of course I just looked at the pictures.
