Default Winter Proofing the XK/R

Hi all

Those of you who run the cat as a daily drive in wintry climates:

What precautions do you take to make sure the cat gets through the cold season with the least of problems, in particular from road salt:

my view:

1.Fit winter tires
2. wax the steel struts that run under the car forming an X approx. behind front axle
3. wash the car as often as reasonably possible, eg. every 2 weeks, at least rinsing with plenty of fresh water to remove salt - including the underside as good as possible

What do you do?

Personally, I simply get in and drive it every day.

Spray LPS3 on everything underneath. It's a modern cosmoline and works pretty well.

Keep an 10mm wrench around to unhook the battery when the door glas freezes hard enough to trip the limit switch. This year I've been able to tap the glass down 1/2" when it sticks and doesn't drop to open the door. So far I haven't needed to reset the battery. I'm also keeping the car in the garage at night so it's not frost locked in the AM.

Otherwise just keep an eye on the roads. Came out Wednesday evening and there was raindrops frozen all over the car. Just left it idle for a couple minutes and then put the defrosters on with high fan speed and everything cleared up.

I also need new tires...

Ter11, not knowing what car you have or the environment.

If you have salt on the roads. Remove the wheel well liners in spring to wash.
The carpet like material itself holds a ton of salt and there are lovely storage spaces for salt behind.
But nothing alarming like the etype's rust buckets.

I had an issue with door latches not closing when it's really cold out. The door would just bounce off the door jam until the car heated up. Not sure how many are driving their XK's below freezing, but that was my only issue. Everything was greased and working as it should. Jaguar specialist could not figure it out since there was nothing "wrong".

Some like to put a lawn sprinkler under the car to wash off extra salt, but I like using a power washer and just lay underneath the side of the car to give it a rinse.

In my case we are talking a very low mileage 2011 XK in Switzerland.

I tend to keep it stored all winter - unless it rains heavily a day or so after the roads have been salted and I feel the urge to take her out.. With the soft top I really hate to have any salt sitting there for too long and screwing with the fabric. Being in the Northeast not too far from NYC -- they love to use salt on every road I'll have to look into the LPS3.

Keep an extra pair of jumper cables or power pack as a 'just in case' if not daily driving it and not on a charger

I also have to get 2 new rear tires soon ...

I was (attempting) making a joke because it rarely freezes here in Louisiana. Not at all like Switzerland.

Perhaps a winter home in southern Italy. I live in southeast Texas, we see a few days of freezing temps per year and they don't salt the roads.

Move to Florida. That worked for me.

Been there, done that. Not for me. Lived in Miami in the '70s when stores had "English Spoken Here" signs in the window. Worst of all, my wife had a bad hair day every day.

I have been driving my 07' XK for two winters now, coldest being something like -30 centigrade. Door latching didn't work always, but after some oiling and random spraing of lube through the lock holes in door the problem vanished. One hour ago it was -10 and very slippery, but no problem. I do have winter tyres without spikes. Just don't leave your car uphill, it won't move
Works far better than I expected. Just remember, you are not king of the road with a XK in wintertime. Then you will survive just fine!
