Default XK Sport Cats / Sport Mufflers

I'm on several other Marque car forums, so I understand the impatience with questions that have been asked and answered multiple times. I have, however, done a search here and did not find anything (doesn't mean it's not there, I just didn't find anything). So, my apologies in advance if this has been asked/answered, and thanks for your patience with any info.

I have a new-to-me 2009 4.2 XK and have been looking for 200 cell sport cats, or alternatively, a sport muffler for a little throatier note. I'm not looking to change to the XKR system with quad tips as frankly, I like the single twin outlets. I've looked online and found nothing. I checked VelocityAP but they only have the 5.0 application. Is there such a thing? What have others done to give their 4.2 a little more sound? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the stock muffler on an '09 XK is a valved muffler that would have a fuse that could be pulled, right?

Thanks again for your patience.

Cheers.

An ‘09 4.2 xk… why waste the money on a high end exhaust. Head over to a custom exhaust shop and fabricate what you want and can afford, then drop on some interesting tips.

Its lipstick, not performance.

Mina Gallery is a vendor of a variety of aftermarket performance and appearance parts for Jaguars. Unfortunately for you, all of their exhausts feature quad tips. Check out their offerings by clicking on their link, above.

As @guy recommended, you'll spend much less $$$ at an exhaust shop to get the sound you want. Try simple mods first, like adding an H or X pipe and/or deleting a resonator, before changing your cats. There have been many posts on this Forum, so search for what others have done. Before you swap your cats, consider an exhaust cut-out for more noise.

The easiest way to search this Forum is to use Google. Enter "Jaguar X150 Forums" followed by a few key words that describe what you want to know, such as "4.2L XK exhaust mods".

Thanks. Yes, that's certainly an option, but I would prefer to find something that's "bolt-on" vs. fabricate if it exists. And I have enough of an automotive background to know it's just sound and doesn't improve performance. But a little more sound, not performance, is what I'm after.

An X or H crossover may end up being the way to go. Thanks. I'm just surprised there are no aftermarket "sport muffler" available for the 4.2 XK. On both my Porsches (993S and 996) I tried half a dozen different mufflers until I found the sound I wanted. With my Ferrari I replaced the stock muffler with a Tubi and there are many other different aftermarket brands as options.

There are several aftermarket exhaust systems available for the X150 XKR models, but I'm not aware of any for the XK.

The X150 is a MUCH rarer car than the 911... the whole 9 years of production ended up with litle less than 2 years of 911 production... Split it between the R's and the convertible and you have a figure of the very mall market they are.
You're not wasting much avoiding the XKR exhaust as it's really extremely "discret" compare to a quite similar Maserati fron that era...
The sound of a 4200GT would have been perfect on the XK...I think I'll try a cut out if I manage to get rid of the Battery problem. DO you know about cut outs??

I've had various combinations on my vehicle including:

Cat cell count -100 , 200 & 400
Mid pipe - dual resonator, single resonator & custom x-pipe
Rear box- xk & xkr

My current set-up is 400 cell > customx-pipe > xkr rear box (with outside valves in closed position)

I do like the above set up as it's not too loud although has a very nice high pitched exhaust note due to the x-pipe .

In your case I would start off with the simplest solution that being swapping out your resonator for a x-pipe , it will not gain any decibels however the pitch will change dramatically, from there if you are looking at potentially more sound free flowing cats could be installed or swapping out your rear box

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. Since there is apparently no such thing as an aftermarket sports muffler or sport cats for the 4.2 XK, I think the route I'll take is simply to install an X-pipe, as recommended by Stuart S. Simple, inexpensive and straight forward. If anyone has a recommendation on a particular brand or best source, please let me know.

Probably more questions to come as I learn more about this XK.

Cheers.

The XK & XKR exhausts are interchangeable, if that helps. There's multiple suppliers of X-pipes pre-fabricated for your car.

Interesting how we all have different solutions.
I too found the constant loud drone an annoyance on long drives, though fun on the short drives.

I returned the centre resonator (I did try the x-pipe for awhile but its too “adolescent” for me) and am using the active exhaust again. But I am running 200 cel cats.

Maybe try this: find/buy someone's original two outlet back box, cut it open at the top so it is undetectable, remove some or all of the piping, seal it back up and see how it sounds. FYI, I have no idea how the exhaust flow is routed, you may want to remove sections between the compartments in the box one section at a time to see how it sounds; my experience has been with Buell motorcycles where it certainly did make a difference. Good luck.

That's exactly what I did many years ago, in my mis-spent youth, on a '72 Porsche 911S to turn a stock muffler into a "factory" sport muffler. It worked well.

I'd go for a Larini setup. They are one of the go to's in exotic car market. Top notch stuff that I doubt anyone would turn their nose at. Not super expensive either.
