Default 1998 XK8 OBD? Fuel Pump Test

I was driving home from putting the title in my name for my 1998 XK8 60k mi car. It had been sitting in the garage for a year while I finished some other projects and I didn't want it out in the snow last winter. I was stuck in miles of traffic and the rain started coming down in biblical proportions. So of course the motor quit. While I was thinking back to MGBs and Brits drinking warm beer from Lucas engineered refigerators the rain quit but the car wouldn't start. I managed to coast it down hill ( this thing does not like to roll ) and into a parking lot. While I was waiting for a tow I pulled one of the plastic engine covers off and saw a valve on the fuel rail. I pushed it and heard a small hiss but no gas. I put in five gallons and still no fire. I have searched this great site but am unable to find what tye of OBD my car uses (SDD?) Can I buy the software? Some of the posts I read seem to indicate that the pump is not controlled by a simple relay and mechanical regulator. It seems that Jaguar was evolving rapidly during the 96-06 model years? Any help with linking this year to the correct year manual would be helpful and how to test the fuel pump before I have to pull the tank would be great.

Thanks:

Gary

Welcome to the forum. Your car has the standard OBDII connection. Any code reader will connect, but only a few will read jag specific codes, and none will read fuel pressure.
The pump only runs for a couple of seconds when the key is turned to position2. Cycle it several times and see if you get fuel from the schrader valve. It is not unusual to have the pump fail when bringing a car out of storage.
The factory manual JTIS21 is available as a download in the Sticky near the top of the forum page. You may need to accumulate 10 posts to download it, but there may be a mediafire link that you can use.

That applies to the 4.2 liter cars only (2003 and later in the US).

Wow! I work part time on a lot of different cars, currently a Toyota Prius C total a Lincoln Aviator total and and a Volvo S40. I bought the Jag mostly intact because I love the looks of it. I owned two E types way back when. This is the most knowledgeable and responsive forum I have joined. I'll perform the tests and report back. Thank you all very much.

The fuel pump is bad. I siphoned the fuel out of the tank and removed the shield behind the tank. I found the removal procedure on jagrepair.com, has anyone been able to get at the pump without pulling the tank? It sounds like getting the fuel lines disconnected is a real pain? Any other thoughts are appreciated.

I cut a hole in the package shelf. It's thick and not easy to cut. There was a thread with pictures last year, but shows using a hole saw while I used a nibbler and shears.

Thanks for your reply, At first the thought of cutting through the deck to get at the pump was too much for me. I have done it on beaters by going through the trunk floor but........... cutting my Jag? I read the post you linked to and after seeing the neat job that was done with the hole saw and the one with the nibbler I am now working to convince myself that it would be OK. :-)

If you consider that the pump replacement is probably a one time event, it's not really worth the effort. My decision was based on the fact that I will be visiting friends every year or so out of state.

A pump failure under those circumstances could get expensive, but if I can change it with a minimum of tools in a couple of hours it's almost a roadside repair. I include a spare pump and a couple of used coils in my travel kit.
