2002 keys - are they a chip key?
I've got a 2002 XKR convertible, and I can't find a definitive answer to my question:
Does this car take a chip key, or is it a simple cutting job for a spare key?
Thanks.

People have been able to find LockSmiths that are capable of grinding the Tibbe Key Blank, but cannot program it to the car; I came across someone in Yakima I think, which is ~1.5 hrs from where I live. This is still useful if you only have one Black Head Master Key like myself, as the copy of the key without the chip programmed will still unlock the door and trunk locks, but it will not start the car until programmed by Jaguar, or a garage with the proper equipment. This allows you to have a spare key to gain access to the vehicle in case you lock your 'real coded key' inside the cockpit or trunk; even worse if the car is running. It happens, just check the post page, a member currently has their keys locked in the trunk with the battery disconnected.

You can also get another key fob/remote. These are very inexpensive on ebay and there is a DIY procedure on this forum for programming them to your car (the transponder key is not so easily programmed). The fob will allow you to gain access to the car and the trunk and also to disarm the security system.
I put an extra key in a 'hide-a-key' box wrapped in foam and tucked it up in a shield under the back of the car.
My wife called one day and said she stopped off on her way to work to get a tire repaired for a leak (nail in the road, now in the tire). She was about 40 miles away and wanted to know if I could DROP EVERYTHING and bring a spare key??? I asked why and she said the kid repairing the tire locked the keys in the car!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did not even bother asking how.
I remembered the hide-a-key and told her to give the phone to the kid. I told him to lay on the ground behind the car and reach up........................
He said "I found it!!!!!".
He later told my wife "THANKS-YOU SAVED MY JOB".(plus I did not have to drive all over creation to deliver a key)
If you buy a cheap key for XJ40 or X300 and have the correct cuts made, the key can never start the engine but it will get you into the car. It can never be configured to the car because it lacks the transponder.
If you have a 1997 X100 and live in the U.S. then you don't have to worry about transponders.
Something to think about???

Not the Ford part, but this one works fine on my 2001 XK8:

my Jaguar dealer (Jaguar Land Rover of Tulsa) made 2 extra keys for me that do everything a car key is supposed to do. The cost was
very reasonable.
If you need an extra key that will start the car et al then call around to dealers in your area. The cost might surprise you.
worth a shot.

Was looking into getting a key. I misplaced one. Found it this morning.😊
I've got two keys, a regular one and a green valet key. From what I could come up with the green one just can't open the glove box or trunk?
If I had to get a key made, I think I might have a problem. From what I found, a scan tool is required. I've got some sort of canbus issue. It won't communicate with a scan tool. Ford's can be programmed if you have 2 good keys. Appears jaguars might be different.
I know the 1997 X300 does not require key configuration for North American market but never had to configure the 1997 X100 so I thought it was the same for the X100?
My mistake for assuming the transponders for all jaguars started in 1998MY North America.

Another question. Ford's from the same time you could code the keys without scan tool if you had 2 good keys by cycling the keys and locking and unlocking the doors I think. It's been a long time and don't remember the exact procedure. Am I correct in thinking Jaguars won't do this?
From what information I could find jaguars have to have keys configured using WDS. So since my 2000 XKR has a canbus issue and won't communicate, is that going to prevent me from coding a key?

I doubt there is a shortcut to this involving cycling the door locks, but anything is possible.
