Default 2002 xkr 100

Is it worth going after the xkr 100 or would it be better off buying a newer xkr. Thanks for your inputs.

Most folks would suggest that you go with the 2003-and-newer version due to the 4.2 engine being more solid with fewer potential issues than the earlier 4.0 engine with its plastic tensioners flaw. Regardless of which version you decide to go for, be sure to obtain a complete service history before you purchase the car....

If you need to ask, then go for the later car. Some of us here got stuck on the earlier model's gorgeous design and never really had a choice in the matter. Best of luck!

If the XKR has the BBS montreal wheels, those are worth quite a bit of money. I learned the hard way.

Step 1: buy xkr 100
Step 2: swap wheels with regular xkr wheels
Step 3: sell bbs wheels
Step 4: sell xkr 100
Step 5: buy the newer xkr
.
.
.
Profit?

They are out there. I just bought a 2003 XKR. 2003-2006 all have the newer 4.2 engine, and from what I’ve seen, there is not much difference between them.

Default Depends what you’re looking for

Well, the rule of thumb is that newer the car, the better performance and reliability. A lot depends on the service history and whether the car has been cared for.

If it’s a reliable daily driver work horse, with looks and power, you’re looking for, the Gen3 model is best. Be prepared to give it care and attention, and a CTEK battery maintainer/tender if you don’t drive it for a week. Being capable of fixing things, will help keep costs down plus forum members here have lots of tips and can help.

Me I was looking for a “fixer upper” to tinker with in the garage. Preferred the n/a engine, wooden trim interior and overall comfort of the Gen1 convertible. Plus it’s my first car with the British Racing Green colour paintwork.

Or just buy a 4.0 version which a previous owner has already updated to the latest tensioners etc or budget for the cost of doing so yourself. Its much more important to buy a well looked after car, rather than simply focus on the year it was made.

The Xkr 100 from 2002 can never have the plastic chain tensioners? As I understand it from 2001 Jaguar had abandoned them for the stronger metal construction

^^^^^^^^^^ This.

I'm glad I didn't shy away from an '02 XKR just based on the YOM. The previous owner did the cam chain tensioner repair after the usual failure. I don't know if it was the plastic tensioner or a metal tensioner that failed, but in any case the car came to me with only 500 miles on the new tensioner replacement, and has been a joy to own. I've got about 20,000 miles on the car under my ownership, trouble free for the most part.

besides wanting a car with the tensioner upgrade, I'd advise having it put up on a lift and having a knowledgable person examine the car for rust. A car needing rust repair is what would put me off of a purchase, not YOM.

Default Rust... wise words

Wisdom... Year of Model (MY) is no protection against the dreaded tin worm.... aka rust.

Body panel rust can be dealt with, but walk away if you have rust in the chassis

Question Jaguar-XKR-100

Sacho,

Is this a true 2002 XKR-100? If it is then you need to know that it is a Special Edition! It was made to Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Sir William Lyons, the founder of Jaguar. They made 30 of the Limited Edition Coupes and 270 Convertibles. They were fitted with 20" BBS "Montreal" Wheels, Brembo brakes and Cross-Drilled Rotors, Anthracite paint and charcoal interior with Recaro seats and the Coupes were fitted with a special Handling Package, which was continued in later years and called the "R" Performance Package.

To me it would be the condition of the Car first and then considering the mileage and such. If the 2002 is a Coupe, your would have to buy the Coupe as only 30 were made....It will be more Valuable as the years go by! It has a special Emblem on the Nose Piece, White with Red Letters "Jaguar-XKR-100" and the Tread Plates say "Jaguar - XKR - 100"....If it's a Convertible, it will have the Emblems but not the "Handling Package"! and probably not as valuable in the long run.... If it's a Coupe, it's worth a second look!

My 2002 had the red plastic tensioners and the original dark brown plastic chain guides.
