Default 4.2ltr 6 speed gearbox - XK8/XK differences

Does anyone know if there are differences between the 6 speed box in the XK8 and the subsequent XK with the same engine? I have a torque converter issue with my '03 XK8 and there is a box on eBay from an '07 car but don't know if they are the same. It could be an economical way to get mine fixed if it fits.

The ZF part number table I have doesn't go to 2007 but the TC code for the NA cars is always D85 and S/C cars is B84:
http://www.zf.com/na/content/media/e...atalog_pdf.pdf

There is a thread in the S-type section about a similar problem with some leads on where to get a TC rebuild (assuming you can stand to have the car out of commission for that long):

I believe that any Jaguar or Land Rover 6HP26 would work, so long as you have the dealer tool to program it with the right software. It wasn't until the 6HP28 that there were significant physical changes, and that came with the 5.0L engine.

Even the differences between the TC probably aren't important (meaning there likey isn't any harm in putting a supercharged B84 TC in your NA car)

If you could get the actual numbers from the transmission that would be a good place to start on really confirming compatibility.

Or if it's really cheap, maybe it's worth the risk.

Thanks for that - lots of small variations but doesn't look like anything major as a difference. Looks like the one I have seen is 6WB3 7000 BC based on a label which also says V8 4.2 NA, and it also has a label 1068010136.

Will try to find out more as it is a good price, but need to consider the fitting cost for it if it isn't right - I don't have the facility to swap it out myself unfortunately so need to pay someone to do it for me.

I've managed to find a box out of a 2003 car so am getting that - a couple of people I spoke to said the issue potentially is the electronic control as it would mean going backwards with the software and if that doesn't work neither does the car so a cheap box becomes expensive with the fitting costs wasted. Now fingers crossed it solves the issues I have!

The software can be upgraded with IDS, which a Jaguar specialist should have available.

Fluid and filter is recommended when you don't know the history, and personally, I would also reset the adaptations and take the car through the drive cycle to avoid any shift quality surprises. This can also be done with IDS.

Thanks Charlie - what they seemed worried about was more that it was a downgrade of the software rather than an upgrade. I've found a box from a car the same age as mine, it has done 62k miles so I've bought that and will get it fitted. It has a 3 months warranty so I'll drive it for a month or so before getting the fluid and filter changed as there is little point in spending that money if it turns out not to be a good box.

Sorry, what I meant was, whatever transmission you get, you can upgrade it to the latest software with IDS, so the software part matters less. You can even reprogram a transmission from an XJ or S-type to work in the XK8.

Cheers - useful information but hopefully the box I have ordered will work well and I won't need to consider this again for a very long time!
