Default 97 XK8 tilt/retractable steering

I have had my 97 XK8 convertible for about 3 1/2 years and the tilt/retractable steering has never worked. Fortunately for me, it is stuck in the perfect driving position. The only sound it makes is when I push the joystick down toward the floor in either the auto of off position, and it is a single click coming from the passenger side. I removed the glove box today and discovered that the "click" is coming from a grey plug with about 95 tiny wires fed into it. The print on the side is F5SB-14A464-AA and underneath that is 001 6L 10A0 a. Any ideas? Thanks to all responders. Oh, and I did search the threads and found plenty of info, but I am still unclear on any action I might take to remedy the dead steering column. My car has a little over 50K on it.

I've moved your post from the General Tech section to the XK8/R section for greater visibility/response

Much obliged. And I like your car. Mine is the exact same colours.

Common problem. My 'reach' doesn't work either. The 'tilt' is a lot easier to fix. The problem is generally a small cable, like a 3" speedometer cable between the motor and the gear unit that moves the column. Or . . . the small cable destroyed the nylon gear that it fits inside. Coventry West had a bunch of the cables made up as they are not, and never have been, available from Jaguar. The dealer's solution is to replace the steering column. Think that runs a little over a hundred dollars.

If you fix the 'reach' problem please post pictures that I can follow to fix mine. I have the cable in hand awaiting your response.

[edit] Notice the Douglasville, GA. Lots of us Atlanta Area folks around. We have had one Atlanta Area 'cars - n- pizza event a few weeks ago and plan on a North Georgia Mountains Spring tour.

Will do. My wife and I have a cabin in Suches, so I will keep my eye out for the spring tour dates.

Know where Dial, Ga is? How about the Taccoa Riverside Restaurant? Not too far from Suches.

We are very close to Dial. We are on Skeenah Gap Road just after you leave Union and enter Fannin. And we dined at the restaurant many years ago. I always notice their billboard on the way up.

The "reach" feature on my 2004 XKR is inoperative. The "tilt" works normally. I can hear the reach motor operating when I move the switch, but the column doesn't move. I can, however, manually pull the column aft and push it back forward to the tune of nylon on metal. Is this a cable problem or a gear problem, or something else?
