Default aerial mast removal issue

I have been trying to remove my old mast today, it has been getting stuck and not retracting properly.

I removed the nut at the base of the aerial and turned on the radio and pulled as the aerial went up but eventually it stopped and would not budge any further.

The replacement aerial picture below shows a tang which I could imagine would prevent it coming out.

Any suggestions?

Hi,
I've just looked at the removal and what you've done is correct. Perhaps the tang is getting caught on the underside of the grommet. Has the mast fully extended before you try to remove.
As you have the new one, try a little more force and a wiggle.

Pulled it as hard as I dared today to the point of bending the fixing braket, the aerial is now sitting a quarter inch higher.

Hi,
Just had a careful look at your photo, would the solution be that the tang has to pushed in toward the side of the mast in order then to withdraw it.
If you know what I mean.

It would seem so but I don't see how it can be pushed inwards.

I did find this, someone else with the same problem need help replacing antenna mast it seems he used brut force to get it out.

The first time I had to remove the aerial completely and take it apart. The plastic "chain" had broken into pieces inside. I cleaned and lubricated the gears and re-assembled it. Then the installation of the new aerial was easy.
