Default BBS Detroit alloy original ring material?

Hi, got my hands on Detroit alloys w/bargain price & common kerb damage on rings.

Wondering what material are original rings?
(afaik aftermarket ones from UK are steel)

As far as l know they have always been polished stainless steel.
I have couple of brand new never fitted rears I picked up from old dealer stock and they actually have no trim fitted.

The Sepang on my 2005 XK8 used the same trim ring as Detroit. Never saw anything other than stainless steel OE or aftermarket trim rings advertised.

I agree with both of the above. I had my wheels rings replaced a while ago. £100+ Each

After tire remove & removal of centers (bolts did come out cleanly w/o hassle) I examined rings more closely:
- they are painted
- pretty soft as can be abraded w/hand file without force
- there was hand-written A/B/C/D letters inside rims and centers
So I suspect that rings on these rims are aluminum and already replaced once or what you think (see picture, red square shows some hand file test)

Non OE BBs ring?

That appears to be the rim itself. Trim ring is fitted over that rim on the BBS wheels. Is that simply one side of the barrel or are your wheels actually "split" rims? Picture unclear.
Possibly damaged in the past and since removed or never fitted.

Here is bit more detailed picture before I dismantled rims. I'll get better pictures after I wash barrels. Steel ring should be quite thin to fit.
But yea, that could be a case that rings had been removed already.

Similar rim 'ring' (on sell somewhere)

trim rings will totally fix those wheels.
they are not cheap but easy enough to fit (instructions available online)
l have a couple of spare new old stock rears, never fitted and trim rings are not fitted so maybe in some instances they were not fitted.

Here's a comparison of split rim alloys with and without Trim Ring fitted. These are Sepang but the same Trim Ring fits yours.

WITH Trim Ring:

WITHOUT Trim Ring:

The thin stainless steel Trim Ring fits over the outer section of the aluminium.

Default 20"BBS rings

Does anyone have a source for the rings? I would like to replace all the 20" rings on my Detroit's. All have the dreaded curb rash some were my fault some not.

Shoot! I just wrote a Book about BBS SS Wheel Rings....It was so interesting that I thought I would send you Guys a Picture of one but when I pushed the wrong button everything went away.....So, I will keep this one short: You can buy BBS Gear and I mean everything from: Sales@sbwheels.co.uk

I better Sign-off before I lose this..

YYC guy,

Those SS Rings are easy to work with...if you have Curb-Rash...I got sort'a forced into a Curb by some Guy about a year ago...so the Right Rear got about 10" or 12" of "Curb Rash",,,,, ,Looked real BAD! Went to Harbor Tools and bought a Rasp and (2) Files... Started with the Rasp and cut the heavy stuff off...Then the little File, as I didn't need the Medium one...Worked for a little while with it and then got my Body Sand Paper (800) then (1600)...Now you can't see where the Rash was.....It's nice and shiney now! Saved a Hundred Bucks!
