Default Center console latch

Several previous posts describe issues with the front latch under the center console. There is a small rectangular indentation beneath the lower hooked latch. Is there suppose to a rubber spacer or some similar filler in this location?

No such rubber spacer or filler ever existed. I replaced mine with the magnetic latch from earlier Jags and that was an immediate improvement.

All sedans and XJS from the 1980s to about 1993 had the magnetic latch on the console lid.
The late XJ40 started the plastic 'hook' latch and cupholder.

Thanks for the responses. The magnetic-style catch would be a simple solution if it’s a direct fit. Otherwise a DIY substitute with small magnets should be easy.

The magnetic latch console lids DO NOT have cupholders.

UPDATE:
I was able to disassemble the console/armrest top and make an adjustment to the latch mechanism. Now it functions as designed with a wee bit of down pressure and a satisfying “click”. As with all plastic Jag parts of this era, please do be gentle! You may also find sticky residue from a previously spilled beverage, so be prepared to tidy that up as well.
