Default Chirping Noise- Help! **New Audio Added**

Hello. I have. 2006 Jaguar XK8. There is a chirping noise coming out the back of the car. I can’t figure out what it is. I don’t hear it when stopped. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm afraid that the video/audio is no help whatsoever.

When you say "stopped", do you mean when the car is stationary and the engine running or not makes no difference? If so, it must be something to do with the running gear at the rear end so differential, bearings, brakes, universal joints etc so start with checking for bearing play. If no play is evident, jack up the wheels one at a time and spin them by hand and see if the sound appears.

The rear suspension damper upper isolators/bushes deteriorate and the steel shaft rubs making a 'chirping' noise.

It could be that.

I do not hear it when I am stopped and car is running. When the car moves I hear it.

I got the car back from getting tires put on this weekend and they did note that the rear strut mount bushings were in need of repair. They didn't say anything when I picked it up and I just noticed this on the report. I assume this is what you are thinking of? I am not mechanically inclned obviously.

There are 6 bushes/isolators for the rear springs/dampers (three on each side) that need to be replaced from time-to-time.

Default Chirping?? Maybe

My 2000 Xk8 has an intermittent sound which I think is more like a rattle or vibration of some component. It is heard while car is being driven but sounds to me like it originates from either underneath or near the firewall area. However, I have a documented loss of hearing so this may not be the actual location. An acquaintance drove the car and he thinks the intermittent noise comes from the rear of the car. I don’t find anything loose underneath like a muffler bracket or clamp. The intermittent rattle sound does not vary with different engine rpm/power, steering position, speed or whether the engine has reached normal operating temperature. Reading this entry makes me wonder if my “rattle” sound might be the chirp you describe??

An internal valve inside the factory rear shocks sometimes breaks off and rattles around very annoyingly. This happened to the right rear shock in my wife's 2006 XK8 during the summer of 2014. Both of us could only hear the rattle when the top was up. It drove her nuts until Wayne and I replaced the rear shocks in October 2014 with new Bilsteins. That indeed fixed it....

Default Answer?

Shop says: *- WE WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE *CHIRPING, WE HAVE FOUND BOTH REAR *STRUT BUSHINGS ARE VERY WORN. *REPLACEMENT OF REAR STRUT BUSHINGS *SUGGESTED *- BOTH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS HAVE *MODERATE PLAY, REPLACEMENT OF BOTH *REAR WHEEL BEARINGS SUGGESTED. - total for all this work is $2300.

I am thinking of just doing the strut bushings for now and do the wheel bearings later.

People often equate diff output bearing 'thrust' play as wheel bearings,

Play at those bearings have a small amount of play AS NORMAL!

The strut bushings turned out to be the cause of the intermittent chirping on my car. This was diagnosed by Jaguar mechanic this morning! The bushings on which both springs are mounted have totally collapsed/deteriorated leaving metal to metal and slack enough for the strut assembly to wobble.
