Haven’t been on the forums for a bit, but this just popped up. Considering an early XK.
We live 80km out of the city, it would be a run around car into the local town (10 km) or the odd commute to the city( 80-100 km out of)
Not new to older models, my 73 XJ6 was a daily driver until 2023.
Clarke - good to see you back, what year is it? if it has a maintenance history, secondary tensioners, etc - why not. My 2000 has been a daily (aside from the last few years of work from home) since I purchased her 12.5 years ago. Now that we are back in the office, she is getting her daily exercise once again approaching 192000 miles. I purchased mine without any consideration of maintenance history and while I've had a few issues, she has been the best $10500 I've ever spent
Hi Steve, it’s a 97. I assume service history is good since the seller says he is downsizing and has these for sale as well. Haven’t contacted the seller yet.
I have never been bothered about milage or service history, if I’m buying old stuff I expect to spend $ getting it sorted.
We have a 2019 Mazda3 as the run around car at the moment since the XJ6 departed. But it just doesn’t do much for us. The 5.7 Jeep is racking up the miles instead. Need something old and cool to drive.
it’s advertised for $24k aud, but I’m thinking since it’s been listed 3 months it might be 20k or slightly less after negotiations…..I always go in quite low, probably around $15k for first offer.
It’s a 3 hours away so doing some homework first.
My wife's 2006 XK8 was her daily driver from acquisition in early February 2012 until late October 2018 when she decided to return to a Lexus SUV for practicality purposes. Now at 127,800 miles, the XK8 is a toy and does about 1,500 miles per year. I ensure that it gets a 25-mile romp at least once a week to keep it happy and healthy....
My 2006 x100 XKR is my baby! I take to Men's breakfast from our church on wednesdays but only when the weather is good. Hate getting it all dirty underneath as it is hard to clean under there. Also take to the English Car Club Monthly meeting but again only when weather is good. So it is not a daily driver but been retired for nine years so no daily driver.
I daily drive my 4.2 XKR. The only real problem is rust so if you live in an area where cars rust more frequently the later X150 car might be better for you but I don't like the look of them inside and outside as much. I find it's a good idea to book a week off or two from work once a year just to get the car a good service and fix any things that went wrong that year. Normally it's not that bad. So far the car hasn't actually broken down on me in 5 years of ownership and 30k miles on it. Pretty good I think for a 22 year old car. The rust is taking hold though and does need sorting out soon though. I want to do it myself but never really done rust work before.
When I bought my 2005 XKR in 2008 it had about 16,000 miles on it, about 600 of those put on by the then-current owner who had the car for a couple of years but did not really use. Up until a few years ago it was a daily driver but still only put on 5,000 miles a year or less. Due to the combination of my winding down from working and working from home more I have been using the car maybe 3 or 4 times a week and the commutes are not that long. Current odometer is about 63,000 miles. The basic mechanics of the car have been rock solid so the only problems I have had since owning are the typical niggling ones such as the latch leak at the convertible hoses, failure of the roof pump, headrests not moving due to the cable sheath thing, etc. Main problem for a 20-year old car will be finding replacement bits and pieces as things break. The last adventure was obtaining replacements for the 2 quarter window regulators which were pretty pricey.
Mine is a daily driver. I never intended it to be one but it ended up that way. Best $14K I ever spent - ten years ago. The divorce lawyers raked me over the coals for buying a car sight unseen from 1,000 miles away, but it was love at first sight. The ex got the Range Rover Sport but that didn't last long. Now she drives a Hyundai.
Someone drives all mine regularly (except the one my daughter broke). I drive my pretty black one every day. They have been much more reliable than our Merc GL series, vastly more comfortable and fun. Most trouble has been minor except the one transmission I needed recently. However, all of mine are 2001-2002, and the 01 transmission problem was with a warranty replacement transmission replaced with an earlier transmission in the first couple of years.
Wow, a ghost from the past finally re-emerges here on the forum. Good to hear from you again, Dale. You still in Detroit? Come on back to the Triangle when you can....

Thanks Jon, very busy, been quite a while, was looking to see if anyone else had had the ABS module go bad again long after repairing it (after 6 years in my case). Took me a while to realize what was happening since even without ABS the car brakes and handles so well that I had essentially no incentive to fix it. It just occurred to me last week that I had an ABS module in a broken car I could just swap.
Detroit has been good to us, including the weather. As a son of the south, I have no fond memories of the incessant swampy days, rare here. And my wife thinks a vert is excellent up this way for about 2/3 of the year. For the other third, I think it's fine too (heat on, windows up, top down).
Yep, can't argue with your aversion to the miserable summers here. I despise them as well. If you ever visit the area, let me know so we can grab lunch somewhere....
