Firstly hi guys, my first post
I know before you all tell me hes going to ask another of those standard questions, I have had a read about and rather than should I buy this or that I'd be interested in your views on a more general level. I have about 20-22k to spend on a new car and an XK8 in on my short list along with a few other slightly more boring options (S-Type Sport, and Freelander 2, yawwnnn ) ... having read various used car guides I have a few questions:
Considering Im likely to be able to afford a low mileage 2003 (ish) Id hope it would be reliable... that said I'm petrified of buying a car that is going to start incurring massive repair bills; with that in mind I'd be interested in what you have had go wrong and how much it cost to repair. With a general view of how reliable you think your XK8 has been, hopefully I can get an idea of how it compares to other cars.. and if I can afford to run one.
I'm not expecting this car to be cheap for obvious reasons, just a workable solution, I don't do massive mileage, approx 6-7k and should be able to cope easily with servicing, I just don't fancy 2 grand bills any time soon.
Anyone with any thoughts, really appreciate any views, and apologies if this has been asked a million times before.

It has been but that's OK. If you can get into a 2003 your are much better off than even very low milage older models. You will have to accept the fact that almost any repair on these cars is going to cost a lot. Being able to do the simple things will help as the dealer gets $110+ per hour labor and that many of the repairs will be of whole big pieces due to the industry's strategy of simplyifing diagnostic, stocking and repair.
These cars are wonderful to drive; that's why you want one. By all means, buy it if you can afford it.

Hi Neil,
Can't help you much, other than echo what TP just said...But I can help shorten your list...Stay away from the Land Rover..I had one..Biggest money pit in the world for costly problems..Good luck

So far, very reliable here. Only minor issues compared to the other models. They definately put more time, effort, and quality control into the XK range. A few days ago, I saw a 2004 carnival red XK8 with the big 19" apollo rims and something like 35k miles on it on ebay (from chicago) going for $26k BIN. I about died. Mine cost me $35k just one year ago...and it had 45k miles on her.

I'VE OWNED A 2000XKR WITH NOW 70K ON IT FOR 2.5 YEARS. THE CAR IS A DREAM TO DRIVE ON SMOOTH PAVEMENT.
A LITTLE TO MUCH FRAME FLEX ON UNEVEN ROADS. THE CAR HAS BEEN VERY REIABLE AS A EVER DAY DRIVER.
YES DEALERS AND PARTS ARE EXPENSIVE, BUT IT'S A JAGUAR NOT A CHEVY. I BROUGHT MINE FOR 30K WITH 50K MILES.
KNOCK ON WOOD, METAL OR ANYTHING ELSE IT RUNS AND LOOKS GREAT.
BEST OF LUCK, BUT BUY AN "R" BETTER RESALE AND MORE FUN TO DRIVE.

Should have mentioned I live in good 'ole blighty (UK) in other words I'm a limey, although I'm a huge fan of the USA spend a lot of time your way snowboarding, & glad to see the Jaguar brand is popular with you. Land Rover have just released a new model called a Freelander 2 which has been getting very good reviews over here, apparently the build quality is much higher.. we shall see 
I suppose your costs will not really relate to ours, Im looking at an XKR 4.0 6 years old with 26000 on the clock, it will be about £20,000 so expensive by your standards... mind you we pay over $100,000 for a new one.

If your looking for a car that won't be expensive to maintain, don't go with a Jaguar. A Jaguar owner typically accepts that there is a large risk of expensive bills, but with live with it for the love of the car. That kind of makes us crazy, but hey Jags are my favorite car eh.

You might also consider purchasing a warranty.I got one that covers my 02 XKR to 100K, cost was ~$3800. The warranty I got covers just about everything and was sold through the credit union that financed the car.
